ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Timely hitting from No. 17 Delta State proved to be the difference on Tuesday afternoon as the Statesmen scored seven unanswered runs to pull away from Henderson State 7-3 at Clyde Berry Field in midweek action.
Luke Farrar was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Reddies, while Cal Jones and Jaxson Gregg each had two hits.Â
The Reddies went in front right away on lead-off home run from Farrar — his 10th of the season. HSU added single runs on an RBI double from Julio Vasquez in the second, and another RBI from Farrar on a two-out single in the fourth, to grab a 3-0 lead.
Delta State got its bats going in the fifth and scored four runs on six hits to seize a 4-3 lead. Three of the hits from DSU came with two outs, including an RBI single and double.
Henderson had a golden opportunity in the bottom half of the fifth when three walks loaded the bases with two gone, but a ground out on a 3-2 payoff pitch got the Statesmen out of the inning unscathed.
With the score still 4-3 in the eighth, Delta State found itself in the same situation — bases loaded with two outs — and cashed in. A two-RBI single up the middle and an RBI double on the ensuing at-bat extended the Statesmen lead to 7-3.
The Reddies, who had 10 hits in the contest, managed just three in the final five innings.Â
HSU had at least one baserunner in every inning, but was just 4-for-21 at the plate with runners on base and stranded 15. Delta State was 7-for-15 with two outs and scored five of its seven runs on two-out hits.
Henderson returns to action this weekend for a three-game GAC series at Arkansas Tech.
