ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Reddies defeated the Golden Suns 3-2 in the series finale on Monday, earning their first sweep in a decade over Arkansas Tech.
Henderson State (20-19, 8-15 GAC) wasted no time jumping on the board, capitalizing in the opening frame. Macy Hoskins doubled to bring home Hilary Akers, tying the game at one after Arkansas Tech (22-20, 12-11 GAC) struck first. Moments later, Josie Copeland lined a clutch RBI single to score Hoskins, putting HSU ahead 2-1.
After Arkansas Tech knotted the game at two in the top of the fifth, the Reddies responded immediately. Akers reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Jay Albiter to advance home for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Jersey Cabana (8-2) delivered yet another proficient outing in the circle, tossing five innings while allowing just two earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Makenna Keeton (S, 2) entered in relief and shut the door, earning her second save of the season by throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, including a 10+ pitch at-bat which ended with a strikeout.
Offensively, HSU tallied five hits, with Copeland leading the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Akers and Hoskins each added RBIs, providing just enough run support for the pitching staff to finish the job.
With the win, the Reddies secured their fourth straight victory, the second longest streak of the season.
The last time Henderson State won their GAC regular season series versus the Golden Suns volunteer coach Courtney Lassiter was a freshman on the team.
The Reddies finish their GAC series versus Ouachita Baptist on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Ouachita Baptist.
