Reddies Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Northwestern in Road Contest

ALVA, Okla. — Henderson State turned a slim halftime deficit into a convincing road victory by controlling the glass and separating itself after the break, pulling away for a 70-61 win over Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Percefull Fieldhouse.

The Reddies dominated the rebounding battle 41-30, including a decisive edge on the defensive end that limited Northwestern Oklahoma to one shot on most possessions. That advantage translated into extra opportunities and a steady second-half push, as Henderson State outscored the Rangers 33-22 over the final 20 minutes.

After trailing 39-37 at halftime, the Reddies quickly settled in on both ends. Henderson State used its size and activity to clean up the boards, holding Northwestern Oklahoma without a single second-chance point. The Reddies also controlled the paint, outscoring the Rangers 38-32 inside.

KJ Sykes led Henderson State with 19 points, scoring efficiently and setting the tone during a key stretch in the second half when the Reddies seized control. Zaveion Okoh added 11 points in limited action, while Xavier Owens posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to anchor Henderson State's rebounding effort.

The game remained tight early in the second half, but Henderson State gradually wore down the Rangers by winning the battle on the glass and getting stops. A 9-0 scoring run midway through the half helped the Reddies build their largest lead, and they never allowed Northwestern Oklahoma to seriously threaten down the stretch.

Henderson State also benefited from balanced production, outscoring the Rangers 24-15 off the bench and turning rebounds into transition chances, finishing with a 16-9 advantage in fast-break points.

The win improves Henderson State to 8-6 overall and 5-3 in Great American Conference play. The Reddies return to the Duke Wells Center next week, hosting Southern Nazarene on Thursday, January 15th at 7:30 p.m.
