Men's Basketball Falls in Marathon Game to Southern Nazarene

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — In a game that tied for the longest in program and conference history, Henderson State forced three overtimes before falling 90-85 to Southern Nazarene on Thursday night at the Duke Wells Center.

The Reddies showed resilience late in regulation, erasing multiple deficits before Xavier Owens' driving layup with 24 seconds left gave Henderson State a 61-58 edge. Southern Nazarene answered at the horn, however, as Baron Bracey buried a contested 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime and swing momentum into a marathon finish.

Henderson State matched the Crimson Storm shot for shot in the first overtime, with the teams trading baskets and free throws down the stretch. The Storm and Reddies traded layups in their final possessions, with KJ Sykes hitting a driving layup to force a second extra period.

HSU forced a third overtime in dramatic fashion, as Jameel Wesley II was fouled with just 0.2 seconds remaining and calmly knocked down all three free throws to tie the game at 79. The clutch sequence capped another back-and-forth extra period in which neither team led by more than two possessions, sending the contest into a rare third overtime.

Southern Nazarene finally gained the upper hand in the third overtime, scoring the first two possessions and holding Henderson State to a single field goal in the final five minutes. The Crimson Storm went 7-of-10 at the free-throw line in the period, while the Reddies struggled to convert late chances, scoring six points as Southern Nazarene closed out the win.

Owens led the Reddies (8-7, 5-4) with 26 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Sykes added 15 points and Wesley finished with 14. Henderson State held a 42-34 advantage in points in the paint and spent more than 38 minutes with the lead, but Bracey's late heroics and Southern Nazarene's execution in the final overtime proved decisive.

HSU returns to action on Saturday when they welcome Oklahoma Baptist to the Duke Wells Center for a 3:00 p.m tip.
