Men's Basketball Battles Back from Halftime Deficit to Best UAM

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State erased an eight-point deficit and leaned on its interior dominance to edge Arkansas-Monticello 66-64 on Friday afternoon at the Duke Wells Center.

The Reddies (7-5, 4-2 GAC) navigated a tightly contested game that featured six ties and seven lead changes, turning the tide with timely runs and a decisive advantage in the paint. Henderson State outscored UAM 42-14 inside, a differential that proved decisive in a game that went down to the final possession.

Arkansas-Monticello (5-7, 1-5) built its largest lead late in the first half, stretching the margin to eight after a barrage of perimeter shooting. Henderson State answered before the break with a 10-0 spurt to steady itself and close the gap, then carried that momentum into the locker room trailing by eight at intermission.

The Reddies came out of the halftime break with energy, opening the second half with another key surge. A 7-0 run midway through the period flipped the game in Henderson State's favor, thanks in large part to interior scoring and second-chance opportunities.

Neither team held a comfortable lead over the final ten minutes, as the largest lead over the last ten minutes was just four points. The score was knotted six times in the final 20 minutes, with the lead changing hands repeatedly as both sides traded baskets and stops. Henderson State's ability to finish at the rim ultimately offset UAM's outside shooting and kept the Reddies within striking distance until the closing moments.

Henderson State sealed the win in the final minute, capitalizing on another paint touch to regain the lead for good and then forcing a miss on the other end to preserve the two-point victory.

Jabari West led the Reddies with a season-high 21 points; the junior was also second on the team with six rebounds. Xavier Owens (16) and KJ Sykes (10) joined West with double-figure scoring. Tyson Whybrew added seven rebounds, four steals, and a block.

The Reddies make their first Oklahoma road trip of the season next week, beginning with a matchup with Southwestern Oklahoma State. Tip-off from Weatherford is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 8th.
