ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State erased an 11-point halftime deficit and took a late lead, but Ouachita Baptist closed the game on an 8-0 stretch to secure a 66-60 win Thursday night at Duke Wells Center.
Henderson (9-14, 6-11 GAC) trailed 40-29 at the break after Ouachita shot 48 percent from the field and 6 of 9 from three-point range in the first half. The Reddies held the Tigers to 26 second-half points and cut into the margin behind defense and paint scoring.
Xavier Owens scored 13 points and grabbed three rebounds to lead Henderson State.
Jameel Wesley II added 14 points and four steals.
Zaveion Okoh finished with nine points and four rebounds, while
KJ Sykes scored 10 off the bench.
The Reddies opened the second half on a 15-5 run. Owens scored in transition and Okoh converted off a steal to trim the deficit to three. Wesley followed with a pull-up jumper to make it 45-42 with 13:55 left.
Henderson State tied the game at 52 on a second-chance basket from Sykes with 6:16 remaining. Wesley gave the Reddies a 54-53 lead on a drive with 5:33 to play, and
Jabari West put Henderson in front 60-58 on a step-back jumper with 1:20 left.
Ouachita responded with a three-point field goal from Devon Hancock with 47 seconds remaining to take a 61-60 lead. The Tigers blocked two Reddie breakaway opportunities and converted five free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the result.
Henderson State shot 24 of 57 from the field and 3 of 12 from beyond the arc. The Reddies scored 30 points in the paint and forced 12 turnovers, turning those into 19 points.
Ouachita (19-4, 15-2 GAC) was led by Hancock with 19 points. Crew Flowers added 14, and Christian Parks scored 11. The Tigers finished 10 of 20 from three-point range and held a 35-28 edge on the glass.
Henderson State returns to action Saturday at Arkansas-Monticello in Great American Conference play.
