MONTICELLO, Ark. — Henderson State Reddies never trailed and shot better than 50 percent from the field in a 62-48 win over Arkansas–Monticello Boll Weevils on Saturday at Steelman Field House.
Henderson State (10-14, 7-11 GAC) led for the final 39:33 and built a double-digit advantage midway through the first half. The Reddies shot 22 of 43 from the floor and went 14 of 15 at the free-throw line while holding Arkansas-Monticello (9-15, 5-13) to 15 of 49 shooting.
Xavier Owens scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added four rebounds and two steals.
Zaveion Okoh finished with 17 points and three rebounds, and
Jameel Wesley II added seven points and seven assists.
Hunter-Mack Nelms scored eight points off the bench, hitting two 3-pointers in the first half.
Owens opened the scoring with a jumper off a turnover and followed with a 3-pointer on the break as the Reddies took a 5-0 lead. Henderson State extended the margin to 12-4 after a 3 from Nelms and pushed the lead to 32-22 by halftime.
The Reddies shot 47.8 percent in the first half and forced eight turnovers, converting them into 15 points before the break. Henderson State finished with 22 points off turnovers and 13 fast-break points.
A dunk by Owens gave Henderson State a 34-22 lead to start the second half. The Reddies stretched the margin to 47-29 with 13:53 remaining after a pair of free throws from
Jabari West.
Arkansas-Monticello cut the deficit to six with just over five minutes left, but Henderson State responded with a 7-1 run. Okoh scored on consecutive possessions during the stretch, and Wesley added a late layup to seal the result.
The Reddies outscored the Boll Weevils 30-26 in the second half and limited Arkansas-Monticello to 26.9 percent shooting after the break.
