Late Rally Comes Up Short, Reddies Fall to Bison

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Henderson State Reddies cut a double-digit deficit to two in the final minutes, but seventh-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University held on for a 70-61 win Thursday night at the Noble Complex.

Henderson State (10-15, 7-12) trailed 36-26 at halftime after shooting 30.6 percent from the field in the opening period. Oklahoma Baptist (23-2, 17-2) shot 48.4 percent in the first half and led for more than 36 minutes.


The Reddies battled in the second half behind Jabari West, who scored nine of his team-high 11 points after the break. West sparked a 9-2 run with a 3-pointer and a pull-up jumper that trimmed the deficit to 60-55 with 5:29 remaining.


Jameel Wesley II added six points, and Xavier Owens converted a three-point play and a pair of free throws during the late run. Henderson State closed to within 61-59 on Wesley's 3-pointer with 3:56 left.


Oklahoma Baptist answered at the line. Jackson Greene scored 16 points and hit two free throws with 3:28 remaining to push the lead to four. The Bison finished 16 of 25 at the stripe and outscored Henderson State 32-20 in the paint.


Zaveion Okoh, Tyson Whybrew, and West led the Reddies with 11 points each. West grabbed nine rebounds, while Whybrew pulled down five. Henderson State shot 35.5 percent from the field and went 5 of 16 from 3-point range.


Erik Madrid added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Oklahoma Baptist, which used a 14-point lead midway through the second half to maintain control.


The Reddies are back in action Saturday, when they take on Southern Nazarene.
