Slow Start Fuels Reddie Struggle in Loss to Crimson Storm

BETHANY, Okla. — Henderson State University fell behind early and could not recover in a 74-56 loss to Southern Nazarene University on Saturday at the Sawyer Center.

The Reddies (10-16, 7-13 GAC) trailed 11-0 less than three minutes into the game and faced a 35-15 deficit at halftime. Southern Nazarene (19-7, 13-7) forced 15 first-half turnovers and turned them into 19 points, building a lead that grew to as many as 29 in the second half.


Hunter-Mack Nelms led Henderson State with 12 points and eight rebounds, scoring nine points after the break. KJ Sykes added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Xavier Owens scored eight points and went 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.


The Reddies shot 25 percent from the field in the first half and finished at 40 percent for the game. Henderson State made 5 of 16 from beyond the arc and committed 24 turnovers.


Southern Nazarene placed five players in double figures. Tracy Godfrey Jr. scored 12 points, while Baron Bracey and Malik Edwards each added 11. Bam Johnson finished with 10 points and four assists.


Henderson State outscored the Crimson Storm 41-39 in the second half. Nelms sparked an 8-0 run midway through the period, and the Reddies trimmed the margin to 22 on a 3-pointer from Nelms with 8:09 remaining. The deficit never dipped below 19.


Southern Nazarene held a 34-22 edge in points in the paint and scored 27 points off turnovers. The Crimson Storm also added 15 fast-break points.


HSU returns to the court next week with a matchup against Arkansas Tech. Tipoff from Russellville is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 26th.
