Men's Basketball Triumphs in Russellville

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Henderson State built an early cushion and answered each push from Arkansas Tech to secure a 79-74 win on Thursday night at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

The Reddies (11-16, 8-13 GAC) led for nearly 35 minutes and used a balanced attack to sweep the season series from the Wonder Boys (8-19, 6-15).


Jameel Wesley II scored 21 points to pace Henderson State, shooting 8 of 13 from the field and 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. Zaveion Okoh added 18 points and seven rebounds, while KJ Sykes finished with 12 points. 


Henderson State shot 46.8 percent from the floor and held a 40-28 edge on the glass. The Reddies turned 11 offensive rebounds into 26 second-chance points and scored 36 points in the paint.


The Reddies set the tone in the first half: Wesley hit a pair of early free throws, and Okoh converted in transition to push the lead to 6-0. After Arkansas Tech tied the game at 9, Henderson State responded with a 14-5 stretch keyed by second-chance baskets from Grey Garrison and Wesley.


A jumper from Sykes and a late bucket from Wesley sent Henderson State into the break with a 41-35 lead.


Arkansas Tech opened the second half with a 5-0 burst to trim the margin to one. The Reddies answered with free throws from Jabari West and a steal and dunk from Wesley to regain control.


Midway through the half, Henderson State forced consecutive turnovers that led to transition scores from Sykes and Wesley, extending the lead to 67-60 with 6:36 left. Okoh added a fast-break dunk with 4:06 remaining to stretch the advantage to 71-62.


Arkansas Tech cut the deficit to six in the final two minutes behind Connor Davis, who finished with 22 points, but the Reddies converted free throws down the stretch. Sykes hit two with 40 seconds left to push the lead to eight..


Henderson State scored 20 points off turnovers, 16 fast-break points, and received 32 points from its bench.


The Reddies return to action Saturday as they close the regular season with a senior day matchup against Harding.
