Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against SWOSU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State fell to Southwestern Oklahoma State 75-63 on Saturday at Duke Wells Center, despite 15 points from Zaveion Okoh and 13 from KJ Sykes.

The Reddies (9-12, 6-9 GAC) shot 39.7 percent from the field and 2 of 14 from 3-point range. Southwestern Oklahoma (9-12, 6-9) shot 60.9 percent and went 8 of 15 from beyond the arc.


Henderson State trailed 31-29 at halftime after eight lead changes in the opening 20 minutes. Tyson Whybrew scored eight first-half points, and Sykes added five as the Reddies stayed within two at the break.


Southwestern Oklahoma opened the second half on a 12-4 run to build a 47-37 lead with 13:38 remaining. Tobias Roland capped the stretch with a 3-pointer, and Kayden Carter added a layup during the run.


Okoh answered with a layup and a free throw to trim the deficit to eight, and Jameel Wesley II scored on a drive to cut the margin to 49-43 with 10:45 left. The Bulldogs pushed the lead back to double figures behind Carter, who finished with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting and nine rebounds.


Southwestern Oklahoma led by as many as 14 in the second half. Henderson State cut the deficit to 10 on several occasions, including after a fast-break layup by Sykes with 1:42 remaining, but the Reddies did not draw closer.


Whybrew finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Jameel Wesley II added seven points, and Xavier Owens scored six. Henderson State held a 44-40 edge in points in the paint and scored 10 second-chance points.


The Reddies continue a four-game homestand on Monday night, when they welcome Southern Arkansas to town for a makeup game from earlier this season. Tipoff from the Duke Wells Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
