Men's Basketball Runs into Hot Shooting, Stumbles Against Southern Arkansas at Home

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Southern Arkansas shot 58.7 percent from the field and 64.7 percent from 3-point range to hand Henderson State an 83-73 loss Monday night at the Duke Wells Center.

The Reddies (9-13, 6-10 GAC) never led and trailed by as many as 17 in the second half. Southern Arkansas (9-13, 6-10) opened the game on a 9-0 run and built a 39-29 advantage at the break behind 66.7 percent shooting in the first half.


Troy'Reon Ramos scored 25 points and went 4 of 6 from beyond the arc to pace the Muleriders. Jair Horton added 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting, including four 3-pointers, as Southern Arkansas finished 11 of 17 from deep.


Henderson State shot 44.4 percent from the field and made 4 of 15 from 3-point range. The Reddies matched the Muleriders with 44 points in the second half but could not trim the deficit to fewer than six points down the stretch.


Xavier Owens led Henderson State with 22 points, scoring 13 in the second half. Zaveion Okoh added 21 points, four steals and five made free throws. Jameel Wesley II scored 14 points and recorded three steals off the bench.


The Reddies held a 38-28 edge in points in the paint and scored 20 bench points. Henderson State also converted 13 second-chance points and 10 fast-break points.


Southern Arkansas controlled the tempo early and did not surrender the lead. The Muleriders led 39-29 at halftime and pushed the margin to 17 with 10:15 remaining in the second half.


Henderson State answered with a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to single digits and later closed within 69-63 on an Okoh layup with 4:02 to play. Horton and Ramos combined for key baskets in the final two minutes to secure the win.


HSU is back in action Thursday night when they host Ouachita Baptist in the second round of the Battle of the Ravine.
