ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally past Southern Arkansas 5-3 on Tuesday at Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddies (13-11, 5-10 GAC) managed four hits but capitalized on walks and errors to secure the win.
Southern Arkansas (16-9, 11-4 GAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Wyatt Fielding. Henderson State answered in the bottom half when
Nate Moore scored on a throwing error to tie the game.
The Muleriders regained the lead in the third on another RBI single by Fielding and extended it to 3-1 in the sixth when Jacob Lang stole home.
Henderson State cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh.
Cooper McClure drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch after
Grant Fitch singled and
Boe Rodriguez reached on a walk.
The Reddies broke through in the eighth. Moore led off with a walk, and
Tripp Campbell followed with an infield single. McClure delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
Devin Meyers then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Campbell and McClure to score for a 5-3 lead.
Brayden Montes (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing no hits over two innings with three strikeouts.
Tyler Bates recorded the final three outs for his second save. Henderson State pitching combined to limit Southern Arkansas to three runs despite nine walks issued. The Reddies turned three double plays and stranded 11 SAU runners.
McClure led HSU with one hit, one RBI, and two runs scored. Moore scored twice and reached base twice, including a leadoff walk in the eighth inning and scoring the tying run just moments later.
