Baseball Overcomes Late Deficit, Defeats Mississippi College

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State was held to just a single run through seven innings Tuesday, but broke through with four runs in the eighth inning to rally past Mississippi College 5-3 in a midweek matchup at Clyde Berry Field. The Reddies have now won five consecutive games.

Trailing 3-1 entering the eighth, the Reddies (17-11) capitalized on two Mississippi College errors and a key pinch-hit to take the lead. Nate Moore opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third after a pickoff error. Tripp Campbell followed with a single to put runners on the corners.

After another pitching change, Cooper McClure was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tanner Ross reached on a throwing error that brought in two runs to tie the game. Later in the inning, Trevor Flake delivered a two-run single to right field to give Henderson State a 5-3 advantage.

Henderson State first scored in the fourth inning when Campbell doubled and Ross followed with an RBI single.

Mississippi College (17-14) built its lead with single runs in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. Nick Slonaker recorded three hits, including a home run, while Creek Robertson added three hits and two RBI for the Choctaws.

Jayce Moore started for Henderson State and allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings with five strikeouts. Austin Rainey gave up one run in the sixth before Brennan Jarreau worked a scoreless seventh. Brayden Montes (3-0) earned the win after a scoreless eighth, and Tyler Bates recorded the final three outs for his fourth save.

Mississippi College starter Blake Gollott held Henderson State to one run over seven innings before the bullpen allowed four runs in the eighth. Taylor Ballard (0-1) was hit with the hard-luck loss after inheriting two baserunners and committing the error that allowed HSU to tie the game.

Henderson State finished with seven hits, led by Campbell and Hank Penfield with two each. Flake drove in two runs off the bench.

The Reddies return to action Friday with a Great American Conference series at Southern Arkansas.
