Baseball Falls in Pitching Duel in Magnolia

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Henderson State dropped a 1-0 decision to Southern Arkansas in Great American Conference play Friday at Walker Stadium in Magnolia.

The Reddies (17-12, 8-11 GAC) were limited to two hits and did not advance a runner past third base. Southern Arkansas (20-10, 15-5 GAC) scored the game's only run in the seventh inning.

Ethan Roark (1-2) took the loss despite a complete game. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits over eight innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The game remained scoreless through six innings as Roark and Southern Arkansas starter Eli Hutcherson matched zeroes. Hutcherson struck out 10 and scattered two hits in a complete game shutout, retiring 10 consecutive Reddies to finish the contest.

Southern Arkansas broke through in the seventh. Preston Smith reached on a single, moved to third on a stolen base and a throwing error, and scored on an RBI single by Michael Herndon.

The Reddies threatened in the fifth inning when Cale Edmonds singled and advanced to third on a throwing error, but the Reddies left him stranded. Grant Fitch recorded the only other hit for Henderson State.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch from Magnolia is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
