Reddies Sweep Doubleheader, Take Series from Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Henderson State recorded a doubleheader sweep of Southern Arkansas on Saturday at Walker Stadium, taking the opener 8-5 before securing a 2-1 win in the second game.

Game One: HSU 8, SAU 5


In the first game, Henderson State (18-12, 9-11 GAC) built an early lead and held off a late push from Southern Arkansas.


The Reddies scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Cooper McClure. Henderson State added two runs in the third on a two-run single by Tanner Ross to extend the lead to 3-0.


Henderson State pushed the margin to 4-0 in the fifth, then broke the game open in the seventh. Tripp Campbell delivered an RBI double, and Grant Fitch followed with a two-run single as part of a three-run inning that made it 7-1.


Southern Arkansas answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and added a single run in the eighth, but Henderson State added an insurance run in the ninth on a passed ball that scored Tripp Campbell.


Nate Moore led the Reddies with three hits and four runs scored. Ross finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Fitch drove in two runs. Caleb Bryant added three hits.


Dawson Goines (2-2) earned the win, allowing four runs over 6.1 innings. Tyler Bates recorded his fifth save.


Game Two: HSU 2, SAU 1


In the second game, Henderson State (19-12, 10-11 GAC) relied on pitching to complete the sweep in the second low-scoring affair of the series.


The Reddies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when McClure drove in Moore, who reached on an error. Henderson State added its second run in the seventh on a solo home run by Cale Edmonds.


Rhett Richardson (3-1) held Southern Arkansas to one run on three hits over 6.1 innings while striking out eight. Southern Arkansas scored its only run in the seventh on a groundout. 
Brayden Montes closed the game to earn his first save of the season.

McClure finished with three hits and an RBI in the second game, while Edmonds accounted for the other run with his first home run of the season.


The Reddies are back in action Tuesday with a midweek matchup at Delta State. First pitch from Cleveland, Mississippi is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
