Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Swept by Rangers in Home Doubleheader

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State dropped both ends of a Great American Conference doubleheader to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday at Clyde Berry Field, falling 7-2 in Game 1 before a 6-1 loss in Game 2.

Game 1: NWOSU 7, HSU 2

Northwestern Oklahoma State broke a tie game late and pulled away for a 7-2 win in the opener.

Henderson State struck first in the second inning when Hank Penfield lifted a solo home run to right field for a 1-0 lead. The Rangers answered in the fourth, as Blake Mattern doubled and later scored on a single from Chase Gordon, and Jailon Goodfellow followed with a run-scoring double to give Northwestern Oklahoma State a 2-1 edge.

The Reddies tied the game in the sixth: Trevor Flake singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before Tanner Ross lined a double down the left-field line to bring him home.

The game turned in the eighth inning, when Northwestern Oklahoma State loaded the bases and Joel Lindahl delivered a two-run infield single to put the Rangers ahead. The inning extended on a walk, and the Reddies could not escape the damage.

In the ninth, Goodfellow cleared the bases with a three-run double to right field, pushing the margin to five runs and sealing the result.

Ross finished with a hit and an RBI, while Penfield accounted for the other run with his homer. Henderson State managed just four hits against Logan Sandoval (7-4), who worked a complete game with eight strikeouts. Tyler Bates (2-2) took the loss for the Reddies after giving up two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Game 2: NWOSU 6, HSU 1

A four-run fourth inning carried Northwestern Oklahoma State to a 6-1 win in the second game.

Henderson State starter Collin Wheat held the Rangers scoreless through three innings, but the game shifted after a pitching change in the fourth. Northwestern Oklahoma State opened the inning with a double and followed with another extra-base hit from Lindahl that drove in the first run. An error in the outfield allowed the play to continue and set up more scoring chances.

The Rangers added runs on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice, with another Henderson State error extending the inning. Four runs crossed the plate, only two of them earned, as Northwestern Oklahoma State took control at 4-0.

Henderson State answered in the bottom half. Grant Fitch doubled and later scored on a single from Adam Garcia to cut the deficit to three. The Reddies left two runners on base in the inning.

Northwestern Oklahoma State added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Gordon delivered an RBI double in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly from Mattern brought in another run in the sixth.

The Reddies could not generate further offense, finishing with five hits. Garcia recorded two hits and an RBI, while Caleb Bryant added two singles.
Austin Rainey (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in relief. Henderson State committed two errors that contributed to the decisive fourth inning.

HSU fell to 23-16 overall and 13-14 in conference play with the losses, and will return to the road for a midweek matchup against Harding on Tuesday, April 14.
