Baseball Falls to Harding in Midweek Road Contest

SEARCY, Ark. — Henderson State built an early lead but could not hold off a late surge in a 9-6 loss to Harding on Tuesday at Jerry Moore Field.

The Reddies (23-17) scored in three of the first six innings and led 5-3 entering the seventh before Harding rallied with six runs across the final two frames.

Henderson State struck first in the opening inning. Tripp Campbell doubled to right, and Tanner Ross followed with a two-run home run to left to give the Reddies a 2-0 lead. Harding answered with an unearned run in the bottom half after a fielding error and a wild pitch.

The Reddies added to the lead in the fourth. Hank Penfield singled, and Mason Krznarich drove a two-run homer to right field to push the margin to 4-1.

Harding closed the gap in the fifth with a solo home run and an RBI double, cutting the lead to 4-3.

Henderson responded in the sixth. Ryan Wardlaw singled and moved into scoring position before Nate Moore delivered an RBI single to make it 5-3.

After a scoreless sixth from Luke Sides, Harding broke through in the seventh. A double and a walk set up a three-run inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Collin Helms that gave Harding its first lead at 6-5.

The Reddies tied the game in the eighth. Wardlaw reached on a bunt single and advanced on a sacrifice. Moore walked, and Ross lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Wardlaw and even the score at 6-6.

Harding answered in the bottom half. A walk and two doubles produced three runs, with Cooper Newsom driving in two to extend the lead to 9-6.

HSU threatened in the ninth when Penfield doubled down the left-field line, but Harding closed the game with a strikeout and a groundout.

Ross finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Penfield recorded three hits. Wardlaw added two hits and scored twice, and Moore drove in a run with two hits and two walks.

Brennan Jarreau (0-2) took the loss in relief for Henderson State. Keaton Baird earned the win for Harding, and Austin Kelley recorded the save.

Henderson State collected 12 hits but left nine runners on base. Harding scored nine runs on eight hits and drew seven walks.

The Reddies return to action on Friday with the first of a three-game series in Weatherford, Oklahoma, where they'll take on Southwestern Oklahoma State.
