Baseball Takes Game One of Weekend Set at Southwestern Oklahoma

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Henderson State built an early lead and answered each push from Southwestern Oklahoma State in a 13-9 win in Friday's penultimate GAC series opener.

The Reddies (24-17, 14-14 GAC) scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed, collecting 13 hits and drawing 10 walks.


Henderson State struck first when Nate Moore singled and stole second to open the game. A sacrifice fly from Edmonds plated the first run. Mason Krznarich followed with an RBI single, and Ryan Wardlaw capped the inning with a two-run double to center field for a 4-0 lead.


The Reddies added another run in the second. Boe Rodriguez walked and scored on Ross' ground-rule double to left center to make it 5-0.


Southwestern Oklahoma State (22-22) answered in the fourth inning. Chris Clark and John Spoto delivered RBI doubles before Landon Meyer hit a two-run home run to left center, trimming the deficit to 5-4.


The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice from Jose Mendoza.


Henderson State regained the lead in the sixth. Moore and Tripp Campbell drew walks and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Grant Fitch brought Moore home with a sacrifice bunt for a 6-5 edge.


The Reddies added to the margin in the seventh when Rodriguez hit a two-run home run to left field, scoring Wardlaw and pushing the lead to 8-5.


After Southwestern Oklahoma State cut it to 8-6 in the bottom half, Henderson State broke the game open in the eighth. Cale Edmonds delivered a two-run double, Krznarich added an RBI double, and Wardlaw and Adam

Garcia followed with run-scoring hits. The five-run inning stretched the lead to 13-6.


The Bulldogs scored three runs in the eighth, aided by a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, but Henderson State limited further damage.


Brennan Jarreau (1-2) earned the win in relief, allowing one run over 2.2 innings. Josh Doelitsch (3-3) took the loss after surrendering eight runs across 6.2 innings.


Wardlaw led the Reddies at the plate with three hits and three RBIs, including two doubles. Edmonds drove in three runs, while Rodriguez finished with a home run and two RBIs. Krznarich added two hits and two RBIs.


Henderson State and Southwestern Oklahoma State continue the series with a doubleheader Saturday.
