Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Earns Series Win Over SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Henderson State split a doubleheader with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday, dropping the opener 11-1 before responding with a 7-1 win in the second game.

Game 1: SWOSU 11, HSU 1

Southwestern Oklahoma State broke the game open in the first inning and Henderson State never recovered in an 11-1 loss.

Henderson State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Nate Moore doubled and later scored on a groundout by Tanner Ross. The run came in unearned after a throwing error.


Southwestern Oklahoma State answered with five runs in the bottom half. The inning featured four walks, a two-run single by Jose Mendoza, and a steal of home by Keaton Fisher. The Bulldogs added runs in each of the next four innings to build a 10-1 lead.


Dawson Goines (2-4) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, in 1.2 innings. Henderson State committed three errors and issued seven walks, which led to extended innings for Southwestern Oklahoma State.


Henderson State collected six hits, including two from Caleb Bryant. Moore and Hank Penfield each added doubles, but the Reddies left seven runners on base and did not score after the first inning.

Game 2: HSU 7, SWOSU 1

Henderson State (25-18, 15-15 GAC) responded with a 7-1 victory behind timely hitting and a strong pitching effort.

The Reddies scored twice in the second inning on RBI singles from Boe Rodriguez and Nate Moore. They added two more in the fourth, highlighted by a solo home run from Rodriguez and an RBI single by Tripp Campbell to take a 4-1 lead.


Henderson State added insurance in the sixth and seventh innings. Grant Fitch drove in a run with a single in the sixth, and Campbell delivered a two-run double in the seventh to cap the scoring.


Campbell finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Rodriguez recorded two hits and two RBIs. Fitch added two hits and an RBI.


Rhett Richardson (5-1) earned the win after allowing one run over four innings. Brayden Montes and Luke Sides combined to hold Southwestern Oklahoma State scoreless over the final three innings. 
HSU totaled 10 hits and drew seven walks.

The Reddies are back in action Tuesday with a midweek game at Christian Brothers before returning home Friday for the final conference series of the season.
