Nelson Battles Weather, Slow Start, in Second After Two Rounds at Golf Nationals

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla - Lily Nelson was able to get ahead of the weather in a heavily delayed first two rounds of the NCAA Championship at PGA National. After 36 holes of the 54-hole event, Nelson sits in second place in the 98-player field.

Wingate's Amely Bochaton, the top-ranked player in Division 2, leads the field at 9-under par, eight strokes clear of Nelson and Ella Cheek of Dallas Baptist.

Nelson's first round was marked by consistency on Monday, shooting a 1-over par 73. Her round consisted of three birdies and four bogeys. The mid-round weather delay meant the Henderson State senior had the distinct advantage of being one of the few players in the field who did not have an early start Tuesday morning; most of the field remained on the course when the weather delay postponed and eventually suspended the opening round. Players were forced to start at 7:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday to finish their first round before a shotgun start to the second round.

Nelson's round got underway around noon local time at PGA National. The groups of individuals, including Nelson and Ashland's Gracyn Vidovic, started their day on or around hole 16. Nelson started hot, with four birdies in her first seven holes sending her up the leaderboard before a three-bogey stretch on holes five through seven cooled her off.

The New Castle, Colorado native righted the ship with two birdies in her next seven holes before bogeying her last hole of the day. All in all, Nelson carded a two-under 70 on the day, tied for the third-best round by any individual.

Due to the weather, both previous and forecasted, the NCAA has changed Wednesday's start to split tees: instead of players all starting on the first hole, players will start on either the first or 10th holes simultaneously. Nelson will start from the 10th tee at 8:00 EDT (7:00 CDT) for her third and final round, looking to close the gap with Bochaton in search of an individual national championship. The Reddie will be paired with Southeastern Oklahoma's Carley Button.
