Nelson Finishes Third at NCAA Championship

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Henderson State's Lily Nelson ended her run at the NCAA Division 2 National Championship Thursday with the best finish by an individual in program history. The senior finished third in the nation as an individual with a cumulative score of 1-over par.

Wingate's Amely Bochaton finished at 13-under, with Taylor Wilczek of St. Mary's (TX) finishing in second at even par, just one stroke ahead of Nelson.

Like Wednesday's second round, Nelson got off to a fast start with a birdie on the par-five 10th hole, her first of the day. The birdie was the lone one of her first nine, as she made three consecutive pars before a bogey on the par-four 14th hole. A string of four consecutive pars on holes 15 through 18 sent Nelson to the final nine of her college career at even par.

The front nine was a bit more colorful for Henderson's lone representative at PGA National. After pars on the first two holes, Nelson birdied the par-five third hole; unfortunately, the next two holes both yielded bogeys, putting the New Castle, Colorado native at 1-over par, where she would remain until a bogey on the par-four ninth, her final hole of the day, to finish with a 2-over 74 in the final round.

All told, Nelson finished with rounds of 73, 70, and 74, for a 1-over par 217 for the championship. The third-place finish is the best ever by a Henderson State golfer at a national championship. Nelson will earn All-American honors, with her team being decided by the WGCA at the conclusion of the championships on Saturday.
