Football Dominates on the Ground, Bests Bison

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State turned to its ground game Saturday night and produced a performance the program had not seen in nearly 22 years.

The Reddies rushed for 430 yards and six touchdowns on 53 carries in a 66-9 win over Oklahoma Baptist at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium at GeoSurfaces Field. The 430 yards marked Henderson State's most in a game since Oct. 30, 2004, when HSU totaled 453 rushing yards against Gulf South rival West Alabama.
Henderson averaged 8.1 yards per carry and had five players rush for at least 60 yards as the Reddies improved to 2-0 overall.

Chris Gannaway led the team for the second consecutive game with 105 yards on nine carries and averaged 11.7 yards per attempt. Bo Simpson followed with 94 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Jordan Walker added 73 yards and a score on four attempts. Myron Thrash Jr. finished with 64 yards and two touchdowns, and Trent Haygood added 60 yards on 12 carries. Austin Ledbetter contributed 31 yards and a touchdown on three attempts.

Henderson finished with 606 yards of total offense, recorded 30 first downs, and controlled the time of possession. The Reddies gained 21 of their first downs on the ground and converted 9 of 13 third-down attempts.

The scoring began after the Henderson defense forced a fumble on Oklahoma Baptist's opening possession. The Reddies answered with a 15-play, 78-yard drive that took 7:57 off the clock. Ledbetter capped the possession with an 18-yard touchdown run to give HSU a 7-0 lead.
Henderson struck again after Terrance Hampton intercepted Brady Bricker at the HSU 14-yard line. Three plays later, Walker broke free for a 49-yard touchdown run.

The Reddie defense created another touchdown moments later. Oklahoma Baptist fumbled on its next snap, and Amarion Pulliaum recovered the ball in the end zone to push the lead to 21-0 before the end of the first quarter. Henderson forced six Oklahoma Baptist fumbles in the game and recovered three while also intercepting three passes.
Walker moved under center early in the second quarter and connected with Taylin Paskel for a 4-yard touchdown to make it 27-0.

Ryan McDonnell added a 29-yard field goal before Gannaway supplied another explosive play on the ground. Gannaway took a carry 37 yards for a touchdown with 4:57 remaining in the half, and McDonnell connected from 40 yards before halftime to send Henderson into the locker room with a 40-0 advantage.

Gannaway's touchdown highlighted a night in which the Reddies had few negative plays on the ground. Henderson gained 437 rushing yards before losses and lost just seven yards across its 53 attempts.

The offense continued its work on the opening possession of the second half. Walker found Paskel for a 52-yard touchdown to finish a five-play, 63-yard drive and extend the margin to 46-0.

Paskel finished with four receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns and added 51 yards on three punt returns and 34 yards on a kickoff return. His 190 all-purpose yards led Henderson.

Ledbetter completed 8 of 13 passes for 108 yards, while Walker was 4 of 5 for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Henderson finished 12 of 19 through the air for 176 yards without an interception.

Thrash accounted for Henderson's next two touchdowns. He scored from 7 yards out with 4:50 left in the third quarter, then opened the fourth with a 12-yard touchdown run to give the Reddies a 59-0 lead.

Simpson completed Henderson's scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run at the 10:50 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Henderson defense held Oklahoma Baptist to 235 total yards and 13 rushing yards on 25 attempts. The Bison averaged 0.5 yards per rush and managed two rushing first downs. HSU also recorded four sacks for 36 yards and eight tackles for loss.
Mulumba Wa-Kalonji led the defensive front with six tackles, two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Ryan Vollmer added a sack, while Reuben Ingram and Braxton Baker combined for another.

Hampton, Bryant Hammond II, and Kenny Mosley each recorded an interception. Hammond returned his 22 yards and Mosley added an 18-yard return. Leo Morris, Baker, and Pulliaum each recovered an Oklahoma Baptist fumble.

Henderson scored 28 points off turnovers and held Oklahoma Baptist scoreless through three quarters. The Bison's only touchdown came on a 10-yard pass from Jason Ceniti to Xavier Davis with 7:28 remaining.
