Henderson State opened the 2012 baseball season with a double-header sweep of Cameron by downing the Aggies by scores of 6-1 and 6-3, Friday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The Reddies, 2-0 on the season, benefitted from two strong pitching performances by
Nathan Eller and
Tyler O'Bryant.
Eller pitched the opener and went the distance allowing eight hits while striking out four batters. O'Bryant worked his way out of a pair of jams and also pitched a complete game, surrendering six hits while fanning two batters.
In the opener, Henderson plated a run in the first-inning as
Zac Zdanowicz led off the game with a walk and advanced on a single by
Conner Brackhahn. Zdanowicz later scored on a
Josh Salmon ground out to give the Reddies an early 1-0.
The Reddies put up a big number in the second-inning, scoring four runs on four hits all with two-outs to increase the lead to 5-0. The inning was set up when
Adam Ussery and
Taylor Coleman belted back-to-back singles, followed by Zdanowicz reaching on an error to load the bases.
Brackhahn walked to plate Ussery, than
Josh Salmon scored Coleman on a single. The big blow, however, was a two-run double by
Michael Corso.
The Reddies scored another run in the third, before the Aggies scored their loan run of the game when Benshell Garcia opened the frame with a double and later scored on a Nick Smith sacrifice fly.
In the nightcap, the Reddies loaded the bases in the third-inning before
Dustin Hudson hit a two-out grand slam to put Henderson on top 4-0.
Cameron, 6-3 on the season, scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut into the Reddie lead.
The Reddies, however, gave O'Bryant some security runs in the sixth as Ussery opened the inning with a double and later scored on a Zdanowicz double.
Zdanowicz then scored on a Coleman single to give HSU the three-run cushion.
Coleman led the Reddies offensively going 4-for-6, while Zdanowicz ended the day with three hits, including a pair of doubles.
The Reddies and Aggies will conclude their four-game series with a double-header Saturday beginning at Noon.
