Following a one-run loss on Friday afternoon, the Henderson State Baseball team split a doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Saturday afternoon at Clyde Berry Field with a 7-1 win in the first game and a 2-0 loss in the nightcap.
In the first game of the day, the Reddies (11-8, 3-3 GAC) were able to jump on SEOSU's starting pitcher Daniel McKinney for three runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the first inning. McKinney would soon be taken out after facing one batter in the second inning. The three-run cushion from his offense provided HSU starting pitcher Brittan Diamond some breathing room after he had stranded a pair of base runners in scoring position in the top half of the first inning.
Similar to the task charged to Reddie pitchers on Friday, Diamond was forced to work mostly out of the stretch. The senior right-hander worked out of trouble throughout the game as he pitched eight shutout innings before surrendering SEOSU's lone run in the top of the ninth inning. In the time between, the Reddie lineup picked up a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to stake Diamond to a 7-0 lead.
Diamond would strikeout six batters, scattered seven hits, and surrendered one earned run en route to earning his third complete game of the season.
The rubber match of the series featured a classic pitcher's duel that saw both pitchers scatter four hits each while going the distance. The decision however, would go the way of Southeastern Oklahoma, 2-0, giving the Savage Storm (12-8, 4-2 GAC) the series win.
Southeastern plated a run in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch by HSU starter
Tyler O'Bryant. That wild pitch would prove to be one of the few blemishes on O'Bryant's afternoon. The sophomore right-hander struck out four and surrendered one earned run. After the early run, O'Bryant would put up zeros in the run column in the second, third, and fourth innings before the Savage Storm scored an important insurance run in the fifth inning, which was unearned.
As productive and hot as the Reddie bats were in the first game, they were unable to keep that going against SEOSU's starter Brandon Marris. Marris was sharp on the mound, issuing only one walk while striking out seven batters. The Reddies would bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning as
Michael Schell led off with an infield single to shortstop, but Marris would retire the next three batters to secure the shutout victory.
The Reddies will next be in action on Tuesday, March 13th as they will travel to Batesville, Ark. to take on Lyon College in a non-conference doubleheader.
