Reddies Rally to Take Final Game of Series with Southwestern Oklahoma

Dropping the first two games of the series to Southwestern Oklahoma, the Henderson State Baseball team came out on Sunday afternoon and rallied for a 9-4 come-from-behind victory to salvage the final game in the series.

The Reddies (13-11, 4-5 GAC) fell behind early as the Bulldogs (14-7, 6-3 GAC) touched up HSU starter Brittan Diamond for three run in the bottom of the third inning. Diamond, who pitched a complete game his last time out, worked out of the inning without further damage and went on the pitch effectively for the remainder of his time on the mound.

Offensively, the Reddies' lineup was held in check through the first five innings. To that point in the game, the Reddies were held scoreless while tallying just three hits. That all changed in the sixth inning as the Reddies were able to get to the Bulldogs' (14-7, 6-3 GAC) starter for a pair of runs as junior right fielder Josh Salmon launched a two-run homerun to cut the deficit to a single run, 3-2.

HSU would jump out on top with three runs in the following inning to take a 5-3 lead. The first two runs came as the Reddies loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. A walk to Connor Brackhahn scored Tripp Reeves, and Adam Ussery took a hit-by-pitch in the next at-bat to plate Mitch Frey. The third run of the inning would come on a RBI sacrifice fly by Dustin Hudson.

Four insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning were highlighted by back-to-back jacks from Salmon and Hudson. Salmon's blast was a two-run shot and his second of the game.

Staked to a six-run lead, Diamond went back out to the mound in the ninth to close out the game. A leadoff double put a runner into scoring position, but Diamond remained in the game. He would strikeout the next batter faced, but saw the runner at second score on a single and an error by his center fielder in the next at-bat. Hudson would come on in relief of Diamond and got strike outs for the final two outs of the game.

Diamond earned the win, his fourth of the year, while striking out 10 batters in 8.1 innings of work. Salmon was 2-for-5 with a pair of homeruns and four RBIs. Hudson was 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.

The Reddies will return home for a non-conference mid-week matchup with Southern Arkansas on Tuesday, March 20th at Clyde Berry Field. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
