Early Deficit Too Much for Reddies to Overcome

The nationally-ranked No.9 Delta State baseball team scored 14 runs before Henderson State recorded their first hit as the midweek clash between the former conference foes went the way of Delta State by a score of 15-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Clyde Berry Field.

A three-run second inning, a seven-run third inning, and a four-run inning staked the Statesmen (32-11) to a commanding 14-0 lead.  To that point in the game, the Reddies (22-23) managed to reach base just one time as Brittan Diamond reached on an error by DSU's shortstop in the bottom of the second inning.

Despite the early deficit, the Reddies would rally in their half of the fourth inning. The inning started with Connor Brackhan delivering the first hit of the game for the Reddies as he singled to right field. Taylor Coleman would come on to pinch run for Brackhan and then advanced to third on a single to right field by Michael Corso. A failed pickoff attempt of Corso that saw the ball get past the Statesmen first baseman platted Coleman easily from third for the Reddies first run of the game. Two consecutive singles scored HSU's second run of the game. The Reddies would add two more runs in the inning and now trailed 14-4 through four innings of play.

Neither team would score in the fifth inning, but Delta added another run in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 11-runs, 15-4. The Reddies would score another run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't add on to extend the game as Delta took the win in seven innings, 15-5.

Henderson State, who is still vying for a spot in the upcoming inaugural Great American Conference Baseball Tournament, will play host to in-town rival Ouachita Baptist for a pivotal three-game set starting on Saturday, April 28th. First pitch in the series is set for noon on Saturday.
