Henderson State's men's and women's 200 freestyle relay teams placed first at the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference Championships, Thursday in Cleveland, Miss.
The final events of day two of the four-day championships belonged to Henderson State with the Red Wave 200 freestyle relay team setting a school record finishing in a time of 1:21.55 which is a NCAA “B” cut qualifying time.
Robert Fisher got things started by swimming the first leg of the race in a time of 20.62. Denver Dawson then swam his 50 yards in a time of 21.02 putting the Red Wave in third position at the midway point of the event.
Adam Milecz made up some ground by swimming the third leg of the race in 20.09 to move the Red Wave into second-place going into the final 50 yards.
Nicholas James swam his part of the race in an incredible time of 19.82 to overtake Kody Moffatt of Ouachita Baptist and hold off Jacob Dole of Missouri S&T to claim the title for Henderson.
The Lady Red Wave survived a late surge from Delta State to win the 200 freestyle relay in a time NCAA “B” cut time of 1:36.25.
Erin Beu swam the first 50 yards in a time of 24.74 putting the Lady Red Wave just three-tenths of a second behind Delta State.
Victoria Culliver moved Henderson into first by having a time of 23.89.
Chelsea Leary maintained Henderson's lead by swimming the third leg in a time of 23.71 to put the Lady Red Wave in front of the quartet from Delta State by nearly a half of a second.
Lauren Sutton swam the anchor leg and had a time of 23.91 to claim the 40 team points for Henderson.
The day began with the 500 freestyle with
Jeanne Miller placing fifth with a time of 5:11.54 to score 14 team points for the Lady Red Wave.
Will Parmer was Henderson's top finisher for the men, placing 12
th with a time of 4:42.53.
Leary was narrowly out-touched in the 200 individual medley as the senior placed second with a time of 2:06.92, just five one-hundredths of a second behind Delta State's Heidi Nicholas who won the event in a time of 2:06.87.
Paige Sherman also scored in the event for Henderson, placing fourth in a time of 2:13.43, while Camille Leary placed eighth (2:16.93) and Melissa Ralston ended in ninth (2:20.29).
For the Red Wave, James easily cruised to victory in the 200 individual medley finishing with a time of 1:51.08, more than two seconds faster than his closest competitor.
Also scoring for the Red Wave in the event were Brandon Corley finishing 10
th (1:55.54), Bence Greifenstein placing 11
th (1:56.13) and
Aaron Villemez finishing 15
th (1:57.57).
In the 50 freestyle, Culliver was the top finisher for the Lady Red Wave by placing second with a time of 24.38, while Sutton was fourth (24.42), and Beu placing sixth (24.75). Phoebe Campbell also scored team points for Henderson by placing 15
th (26.12).
Milecz was the only Red Wave member to score in the event by finishing tied for sixth with a time of 20.92.
Three Red Wave members scored points in the 3-meter diving competition as Kyle Merritt finished in sixth-place (256.70 points),
Dalton Walthall in seventh (231.10) and
Ben Ramirez in eighth (225.75).
After two days of competition, the Lady Red Wave is in second-place with 280 points with Delta State leading the championships with 417 points. Ouachita Baptist is in third-place (267), while Drury is fourth (110) and Bellarmine in fifth (73).
Delta State also leads in the men's championships with 353 points, followed by Missouri S&T (346.5) and Henderson State in third-place (238.5). OBU is fourth (217), Drury is fifth (186), and Bellarmine rounds out the field in sixth (58).
