Dustin Hudson and
Carlos Rodriguez collected three hits each to lead Henderson State to an 11-1 win over East Central Oklahoma, Friday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Henderson State, 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the Great American Conference, matched its season high with 14 hits to go along with a season-best 11 runs.
The Reddies, winners of three straight conference games, struck early and often scoring runs in every inning with the exception of the second and seventh innings.
Zac Zdanowicz opened the game with a base hit to left field, stole second, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and then scored on a wild pitch to put the Reddies on top 1-0.
After a scoreless second-inning, Zdanowicz again manufactured the lone run of the third-inning by reaching on a walk. The senior from Albuquerque, N.M. then advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Jeff Beck, and then scored on
Michael Corso's ground out.
In the Reddie fourth, Rodriguez led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line and scored on a
Mitch Frey single to increase Henderson's lead to 3-0.
East Central, 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the GAC, scored its lone run in the fifth-inning as the Tigers touched Reddie starting pitcher
Nathan Eller for three of their five hits in the game.
The Reddies answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Corso was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by Hudson's two-run home run to straight away center field to make the score 5-1.
Henderson State continued to beat up the ECU pitchers as Frey led off the sixth with a double off the left field fence. In an attempt to throw out Frey stealing third, ECU catcher Mac Grace threw the ball into left field allowing Frey to score.
The Reddies invoked the 10-run mercy rule by scoring five runs in the eighth-inning, with Rodriguez,
Matt Evans, Zdanowicz, Beck, and Corso producing five straight hits in the inning to bring the game to an abrupt halt.
Aside from Rodriguez and Hudson both going 3-for-5 at the plate, Zdanowicz and Frey both went 2-for-4 with Zdanowicz scoring three runs.
The Reddies got another solid pitching performance from Eller as the senior from Sherwood, Ark. struck out seven batters while scattering just five hits to record
the complete game win and improve to 2-0 on the year.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Saturday with a double-header beginning at Noon at Clyde Berry Field.
