REDDIES LOSE SERIES OPENER TO ATU 6-2

Henderson State continued to struggle offensively as Arkansas Tech beat the Reddies 6-2, Friday at Tech Field in Russellville, Ark.

The Reddies, 21-20 overall and 15-10 in the Great American Conference, have now lost eight of their last nine games and are currently tied for third with ATU in the league standings.

Arkansas Tech, 28-17 overall and 15-10 in the GAC, got on the board in the first-inning scoring on a Reddie error to take a 1-0 lead.

The Wonder Boys added a run in the fourth-inning when Cesar Abreu belted a two-out single to left field to score Josh Johnson who was hit by a Nathan Eller pitch earlier in the inning.

The big blow came in the fifth-inning as ATU scored three runs with the help of singles by Jonathan Finnegan and Jay Johnson to make the score 5-0.

ATU added an insurance run in the sixth-inning when Thomas Biocic doubled to left field to plate James Sharp after he reached on an error to lead off the inning.

ATU pitcher Ryan Taylor cruised through the first six innings before the Reddies finally broke through to score a pair of runs in the seventh frame.

After Andrew Reynolds walked and Mitch Frey singled, Tadarius Hawkins tripled down the left field line to score both Reynolds and Frey.

Relief pitcher Ethan Crocker then entered the game and held Henderson scoreless the final 2 2/3 innings while striking out four batters to pick up his fourth save.

Hawkins ended the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Frey, Taylor Coleman and Michael Corso all had two hits each for the Reddies.

Eller took the loss on the mound after pitching 5 1/3 innings, striking out four batters and scattering five hits.  

Taylor pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out three Reddie batters to improve to 8-3 on the season.

The two teams will finish the three game series with a double-header on Saturday at Tech Field in Russellville with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.
