HSU BASEBALL TO BEGIN GAC PLAY

Henderson State will play host to Southeastern Oklahoma in a three-game Great American Conference series beginning Friday at 2 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field. The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday with a double-header at Noon.
 
The Reddies have struggled out of the gate losing their first six games, including three one-run contests.
 
Henderson State has a .231 team batting average and averages just 2.5 runs per game.
 
Hunter Mayall leads the Reddie offense with a .385 average (5-for-13) including a pair of RBI.
Lee Richardson follows with a .333 average going 5-for-15. Andy Kovarik has played in three games and is 3-for-5.
 
Henderson State has had numerous scoring opportunities but the Reddies have stranded an average of nine runners on base per game. In fact, Henderson State hitters are 0-for-8 with the bases loaded.
 
Jon Luthe will start game one on the mound for the Reddies, with Colton Lorance and Jay Hawley getting the nod on Saturday.         


In two starts, Luthe has given up 11 runs in five innings of work. The senior transfer from Arkansas State has had success in the past, but will have to limit his walks having given up seven free passes this season.
 
Lorance had a solid first outing pitching six innings against Arkansas-Monticello giving up a pair of runs on five hits. The left-hander has a 2.61 ERA and has struck out four batters in 10 innings of work.      


Hawley has been the most effective pitcher in the early part of the season. The right-hander from Queen City, Texas sports a 1.12 ERA and has struck out five batters in 8.0 innings.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma enters the weekend with a 2-2 record after beating Northwood on Tuesday 7-2.
 
SEOSU brings a .197 team batting average into the weekend series. Trevor Bowen leads the team with a .364 average going 4-for-11 with a pair of RBI.
 
The Savage Storm pitching staff has been solid having a team earned run average of 3.06.         
Dwight Camp is scheduled to pitch game one of the series, with Canyon Conley and Jonathan Furlong starting Saturday's twin bill.
 
Camp pitched 4.0 innings against Texas A&M International, allowing three runs on five hits.
 
Conley has an 8.31 ERA after giving up four runs in 4 1/3 innings in his first appearance against TAMIU.
 
Furlong pitched seven solid innings against TAMIU in his first start. The right-hander struck out four batters and allowed three runs in a no-decision.
 
Henderson State took two of three games from Southeastern last season as the Reddies won a Saturday double-header 2-0 and 9-4 after losing the series opener 5-4. Since 2003, the Reddies have a 10-13 record against the Savage Storm.
