Arkansas Tech rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Henderson State 5-4, Monday at the Houston Winter Invitational at Minute Maid Park.
Henderson State, 0-3 on the season, took an early 1-0 lead in the second-inning as
Hunter Mayall laced a double down the right field line to score
Lee Richardson who led off the inning with a single.
After the Wonder Boys scored an unearned run in the third-inning, Henderson State plated two runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Again Richardson led off the inning with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Matt Evans. Mayall, who walked later in the inning, scored when Cory Deere belted a two-out double to left-center field.
AJ Kruzel and
Tadarious Hawkins led off the fifth-inning with back-to-back singles. With runners on the corners and no outs, Hawkins was thrown out at second in attempt to steal while Kruzel scored to increase the Reddie lead to 4-1.
Arkansas Tech, 2-1 on the season, plated another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 4-2.
In his collegiate pitching debut,
Jay Hawley was solid for 6 innings surrendering four hits, striking out four batters and not allowing an earned run.
Reddie relief pitchers took over to begin the seventh and walked three straight batters with the first run scoring on a wild pitch. Arkansas Tech went on to score two more runs on only one hit in the inning.
Henderson State never threatened again managing just one hit in the final four innings.
The Reddies outhit the Wonder Boys 8 to 5, with Richardson and Deere having two hits each.
Nate Rutherford pitched three innings in relief to pick up the win for Arkansas Tech.
Henderson's
Rob Thomas walked both batters he faced in the seventh and was tabbed with the loss.
The Reddies will finish the tournament on Tuesday when they face Arkansas-Monticello with first-pitch at Minute Maid Park set for 2 p.m.
