Henderson State ended a five-game losing streak as the Reddies swept a double-header from Union University 7-4 and 11-3, Tuesday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Hunter Mayall led the Reddies going 4-for-5 with 5 runs batted in, a double and a home run, while
Jared Aschbrenner went 3-for-3 in the second game and
AJ Kruzel was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI in the nightcap.
Henderson State, 7-16 on the season, didn't waste time getting on the board in the first inning in the opener as Mayall blasted a Chaz Wilson pitch over the right-field fence for a 3-run home run. It was Mayall's first home run of the year.
The Reddies increased their lead to 7-0 in the fourth-inning scoring four runs on just one hit.
Carlos Rodriguez and
Andrew Reynolds both walked to begin the inning with
Hayden Daniel being hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Lance Fields grounded into a fielder's choice to score Rodriguez, with Reynolds later scoring on an errant throw by catcher Zach Wylie.
With two outs,
Matt Evans belted his first home run of the season to left field to score Fields.
Union, 5-14 on the year, scored three runs in the fifth-inning, getting a RBI double from Wacey Russell and a two-run single by Brad Royer to make the score 7-3.
Jon Luthe pitched the first three innings and faced one batter above the minimum to get the win and improve to 1-4 on the year. The senior from Searcy, Ark. struck out a pair of batters with the lone player to reach base being hit by a pitch.
Nick Vanthillo pitched the final inning and retired the side in order to pick up his second save of the year.
In the finale, Union struck for two runs in the opening frame as Jim Martin hit a two-run homer off Reddie pitcher
Chris Hunt.
The Bulldogs plated another run in third before the Reddies batted around in the fifth-inning.
Henderson State scored 11 runs on 8 hits in the inning with Kruzel having a two-run single early in the frame and another run-scoring single later in the inning.
Luke McGuire also had two hits in the inning including a RBI double and a single that plated a run, with Mayall adding had a two-run single.
Rob Thomas pitched 2 innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season.
Henderson State will begin a three game Great American Conference series this weekend when the Reddies travel to
Weatherford, Okla. to face Southwestern Oklahoma. The two teams will play a single game Friday beginning at 2 p.m. with a double-header set for Saturday at Noon.
