Arkansas Tech Beats Henderson State 7-3 and 4-2

Henderson State lost a double-header to No. 4 Arkansas Tech 7-3 and 4-2, Saturday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Arkansas Tech, 36-8 overall and 22-5 in the Great American Conference ran its win streak to 17 games.
Henderson State, 17-26 overall and 11-16 in the GAC, challenged the Wonder Boys taking a 3-0 lead in the first game scoring three runs in the first-inning.

The Reddies loaded the bases with one-out as Matt Evans walked, Hunter Mayall was hit by a pitch and Will Powell also receiving a free pass.

AJ Kruzel drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly, followed by Joseph Gary providing the only hit of the inning to score two additional runs.

Arkansas Tech got on the board in the fourth-inning, scoring two runs, aided by an error on the play, on an RBI grounder by Zac Johnson.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Wonder Boys knotted the game on a home run to right-center by Kris Ayers.

Sage Boehner provided Tech with a two-run triple as the Wonder Boys went on the score three runs in the seventh-inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Arkansas Tech added an insurance run in the eighth, as Zac Johnson scored on a wild pitch.

Jon Luthe pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Reddies and struck out five batters in picking up the loss.

In the nightcap, the Wonder Boys built a 4-0 lead with the help of a RBI double by Jay Johnson in the second-inning and a two-run double by Boehner in the fourth.

ATU starting pitcher Mason Reynolds held the Reddies scoreless through the first four innings before HSU scored a run in the fifth as Kruzel tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Conner Brackhahn.

Tadarious Hawkins led off the sixth-inning with a double and later scored on a Mayall single to make the score 4-2.

ATU reliever Randy Vallejo pitched a perfect seventh inning to pick up his 12th save of the season and secure the win for Reynolds who improved to 6-0.

Henderson State will return to action on Tuesday, April 22, hosting Delta State in a non-conference game at Clyde Berry Field with the first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
