HSU BASEBALL TO PLAY IN HOUSTON WINTER INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND

Henderson State will take part in the third annual Houston Winter Invitational at Minute Maid Park, February 5-8.

The tournament will feature six NCAA Division II universities, squaring off in 12 games across the four days.

The Reddies return for the second straight year and will open the four-game tournament on Thursday against Central Missouri with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.

Henderson State will continue the tournament on Friday at 10 a.m. against Arkansas Tech, followed by a Saturday contest with Tarleton State at 10 a.m.

The Reddies will close out the weekend on Sunday against Winona State with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.

Henderson State had a young team last year and went 0-4 in the tournament in 2014.

The Reddies lost to Winona State 3-2 on the opening day before losing to Central Missouri 13-0.

Henderson lost another one-run game on day three, falling 5-4 to Arkansas Tech. Henderson closed out the tournament with a 6-3 loss to UA-Monticello.

Henderson State will turn to its veterans in 2015 as the Reddie baseball team is primed to return to the Great American Conference Tournament.

With eight position starters and a host of pitchers returning, fifth year head coach Cody Hooten feels that this team has a lot of talent and experience that could make a run.

"This is a very experienced group that I think can prove a lot of people wrong this year," said Hooten.  "Most of this year's team are returners and have a bad taste in their mouth from the results of last year. They are very eager to get out there and show what they are capable of."

Playing in a conference that has five teams ranked or receiving votes in the preseason national baseball polls, the Reddies were predicted to finish ninth in the Great American Conference preseason poll by the league's coaches.

This year's team consists of 14 seniors along with a number of sophomores that saw plenty of action in 2014.
"We had a lot of true freshmen that earned a great deal of experience last year, especially pitchers," said Hooten. "Following last year, these guys knew what they had to do to get better and in the off season they put in plenty of work."
