REDDIE BASEBALL BEATS WINONA STATE 5-0

Box Score

Henderson State finished the Houston Winter Invitational with a 5-0 win over Winona State, Sunday at Minute Maid Park.

The Reddies, 4-0 on the season, recorded a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents and a win against another team receiving votes in the latest polls over the weekend. Henderson was the only team in the six-team tournament to go undefeated.

Claude Johnson, who went 10-for-21 in the four games, got things started for the Reddies with a double down the right-field line in the first-inning.

Johnson scored when Jordan Taylor singled to left field, to put the Reddies on top 1-0.

Henderson State erupted for four runs in the second-inning to increase the Reddie lead to 5-0.

With Tadarious Hawkins reaching of a fielder's choice and Matt Evans following with a single, Hunter Mayall doubled down the left-field line to score Hawkins for the first run of the frame.

Evans and Mayall both scored when Johnson ripped a triple to center field.

Taylor followed with a single up the middle to plate Johnson for Henderson's final run of the game.

It was all the Reddies would need as Luke Tebbetts would hold Winona State in check for six innings giving up just four.

Relievers Josh Henderson and Nick Vanthillo would finish the game on the mound to preserve the win for Tebbetts.

Johnson and Taylor both had three hits and a pair of runs batted in, while Evans had two hits.

Henderson State finished the tournament with a team batting of average of .356 including a .479 slugging percentage.

The Reddie pitching staff combined for a 1.50 earned run average, striking out 15 batters while allowing opponents to hit just .172.

Henderson State will play its home opener on Friday, Feb. 13 when the Reddies begin Great American Conference play against Harding with the first pitch slated 2 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
