Box Score Henderson State rallied for three runs in the ninth-inning but it wasn't enough as Southern Arkansas held off the Reddies 5-3, Sunday in Conway, Ark.
Despite the loss, Henderson State claimed the series with a double-header sweep of the Muleriders on Saturday. The series win for the Reddies is the first over Southern Arkansas since the teams began playing three-game series' in 2004.
Trailing 5-0 entering the ninth-inning, Henderson State put together a furious rally.
Lance Fields began the inning with a leadoff double down the right field line.
With one out, Henderson would load the bases as
Hunter Mayall singled and
Ashton Roberts walked.
The Reddies would score their first run on a ground out by
Tadarious Hawkins.
Matt Evans would walk to again load the bases with two outs.
Jordan Taylor would then rip a single to right-field to score two runs and make the score 5-3.
SAU pitcher Travis Johnson would get out of the jam when he got
AJ Kruzel to ground out to short and preserve the win for Colton Strother.
Lance Fields led Henderson's offense in the series going 5-for-11 at the plate while
Matt Evans had four hits.
Henderson State, 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the GAC, will play host to Southern Arkansas (19-11, 9-6 GAC) in a non-conference game on Tuesday at Clyde Berry Field with the first-pitch set for 1 p.m. It will be Henderson's first game at home since February 14.
