Box Score 2 Henderson State split a double-header with Southern Nazarene, losing 3-2 before winning game two 7-5, Saturday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The Reddies claimed the series over the Crimson Storm having recorded a 13-5 victory on Friday. Henderson State 22-15 overall and 14-9 in the Great American Conference has all but clinched a spot in the GAC Tournament beginning May 2.
The Reddies are idle from GAC play next weekend and should clinch a tournament spot based on next weekend's matchups.
The Reddies had to overcome a 5-3 deficit in the series finale to claim its seven GAC series.
Henderson scored a run in the first-inning as
Conner Brackhahn and
Claude Johnson both walked to lead off the game followed by an infield single by
Lance Fields to load the bases. Brackhahn would score on a
Hunter Mayall fielder's choice.
The Reddies increased their lead to 3-0 in the third-inning as Brackhahn walked and advanced to third on a Fields double.
Hayden Lessenberry drove in the first run of the inning with a single, with Fields scoring on another Mayall ground out.
Southern Nazarene put up a big number in the fourth-inning as the Crimson Storm scored five runs on six straight hits to take a 5-3 lead.
Henderson State cut the deficit to 5-4 in the fourth-inning as Fields collected his third hit of the game to score Brackhahn who walked for the third time in the contest.
The Reddies rallied to take the lead in the fifth-inning as Mayall was awarded first-base when he hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Mayall stole second and then scored the tying run on a
Tadarious Hawkins single to right field.
Two batters later,
Andrew Reynolds provided the go-ahead run with his first hit of the game to score Hawkins and make the score 6-5.
In the Henderson sixth, Johnson led off the inning with a solo home run to add an insurance run. It was Johnson's team-leading eighth home run of the season.
Nick Vanthillo entered the game in the fifth-inning and finished the game for starter
Cody Jones. Vanthillo surrendered three hits and struck out a pair of batters in recoring the win and improving to 5-0 on the current campaign.
In game one, Southern Nazarene combined for five doubles and got a solid pitching performance from Jacob Spruill to beat the Reddies 3-2.
SNU had runners on the corners with two-outs in the opening frame, but an acrobatic catch by right-fielder
Ashton Roberts kept the Crimson Storm from plating a run.
Henderson took a 1-0 lead in the third-inning as Brackhahn doubled to left field and was awarded home on a two-base throwing error by Gaige Webster.
SNU tied game in the fifth as Webster hit one of his three doubles in the game to score Michael Descisciolo who began the frame with a double of his own.
The Crimson Storm took the lead in the sixth-inning on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Fultz that scored Dalen Edgar who doubled earlier in the inning.
After SNU added another run in the eighth to make the score 3-1, the Reddies attempted to rally as
Carlos Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Lessenberry reached on a one-out single.
Hawkins entered the game and smacked a single to right field to score Rodriguez from second base, but that was all the Reddies could muster.
Brackhahn and Taylor each had two hits in the game to lead the Reddies.
Johnson ended the three-game series going 5-for-10 at the plate to lead the Reddie offense. Fields was 4-for-11 with three RBI, while Mayall, Lesseenberry, Taylor, Brackhahn and Hawkins had three hits each. Fields also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 26 consecutive games.
Henderson State will play its final home game of the season as the Reddies play host to Ouachita Baptist in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
