Box Score Henderson State played spoiler using a pair of four run innings to beat Ouachita Baptist 8-5 to claim the Battle of the Ravine series, Sunday at Rab Rodgers Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Henderson State, 24-17 overall and 16-10 in the Great American Conference, won the series over the Tigers after the two teams split a double-header on Saturday.
Trailing 2-0 through four innings, Henderson State took a 4-2 lead in the fifth-inning.
With two-outs and a runner on base,
Claude Johnson started a string of four straight hits by the Reddies with a double to left-centerfield.
Jordan Taylor would plate the first run with an infield single.
Lance Fields would then smack a two-run triple to the right-center field power alley to give HSU a 3-2 lead.
Fields would then score the fourth run of the inning with a single to left field.
OBU would get a run back in bottom of the sixth-inning but Henderson State responded with four runs in the seventh-inning with
Conner Brackhahn leading off the inning with a double.
After Johnson reached on an error, Taylor would drive home Brackhahn with a single to left field to make the score 5-2.
Lance Fields would then single to load the bases for the Reddies.
Hayden Lessenberry would drive home the sixth run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
With two outs,
Tadarious Hawkins roped a double to left-centerfield to score two more runs for the Reddies.
OBU would score a run in the seventh and load the bases with one-out, but
Jordan Taylor entered the game in relief of HSU starting pitcher
Chris Hunt to get the Reddies out of a bases loaded jam retiring the next two batters of the inning.
Taylor would surrender another run in the eighth-inning, but
Nick Vanthillo would retire the side in the ninth-inning to pick up his ninth save of the year and secure the win for Hunt.
Hunt pitched 6.1 innings and gave up five hits improving his record to 4-3.
The Reddies totaled 12 hits in the game with Taylor going and impressive 4-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Johnson, Fields, and
Hunter Mayall had two hits each.
Despite winning seven of nine GAC series' the Reddies will enter as the No. 4 seed in next week's GAC Tournament in Enid, Okla. Henderson State will open the tournament on Saturday and will face No. 3 seed Harding with the first pitch set for 7 p.m. at David Allen Park.
OBU, 24-15 and 14-8, entered the weekend in first-place on the GAC but after losing two to the Reddies and with Southern Arkansas sweeping Arkansas-Monticello, the Muleriders claimed the GAC regular-season title.
