Reddies, Tigers Face Off in Final GAC Baseball Series

Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist will face off in the final regular-season Great American Conference series at Clyde Berry Field with the first pitch set for 3 p.m. Saturday.

The two teams will play a double-header Saturday and finish the series with a single game Sunday at 3 p.m.

Henderson State, 25-22 overall and 18-12 in the GAC, is in fourth-place in the league standings and will be attempting to clinch home field advantage in the opening round of the GAC Tournament May 6-7.

OBU, 15-31 and 11-19, is tied for eighth-place with Arkansas Tech and Northwestern Oklahoma. The top eight teams advance to the GAC Tournament next weekend.

The Reddies enter the weekend with a team .264 batting average thanks in part to a big push during the month of April where Henderson posted a team .303 average while banging out 10 hits per game.

Luke McGuire leads the team offensively having a .377 average, while hitting .373 in GAC contests.

Hunter Mayall follows with a .316 mark which includes a .439 average in the last 15 games. The senior from Bryant, Ark. is 25-for-57 in the last month of the season and has a .507 on-base percentage.

Hayden Lessenberry continues to be hot at the plate. The junior designated hitter was hitting just .216 prior to April. Since then, Lessenberry has bolstered his average to .278 overall. This month he has gone 16-for-38 for a .421 average including two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI.

Henderson's pitching staff enters with a 4.56 earned run average while striking out 6.5 batters per game.

Luke Tebbetts, Chris Hunt and Zach Eschberger make up the Reddie pitching rotation for the weekend.

Tebbetts will be attempting to pick up his first win since April 1 when he recorded a complete-game 5-0 win over Southwestern Oklahoma.

Since that contest against the Bulldogs, Tebbetts has worked 18 innings and has a 7.50 ERA. The junior from Winnsboro, Texas is 3-3 on the season with a solid 3.76 ERA having struck out 61 batters in 81 innings of work.

Hunt has won his last three outings after starting the season 0-6. In those three games, the junior from Greenwood, Ark. has a 3.86 ERA and has recorded 19 punch outs.

Eschberger leads the Reddie pitching staff with a 7-4 record overall and a 7-2 mark in league play. The freshman southpaw has a 4.50 ERA and has worked 72 innings recording 49 strikeouts.

The Reddies will look to freshmen Blake Patterson and Kris Priddy out of the bullpen.

Patterson has a team-best 2.39 ERA and has fanned 56 batters in 49 innings en route to a 3-3 record with three saves.

Priddy is 4-0 on the year with a 3.86 ERA. The product of Terrell, Texas has recorded 36 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .247 batting average.

Nick Vanthillo has been the Reddie closer the past two years. The senior from Brasschatt, Belgium has 25 career saves including nine in 2016.

Ouachita enters the series with a .254 team average with the Tigers scoring 4.2 runs per contest.

Ryan Hammer leads the Tiger offense with a .329 average, with Will Wallace next at .310. Also hitting above .300 is Justin Weigle at .307 which includes a team best 11 doubles and 29 runs batted in.

Preston Spears has provided most of the power for OBU having hit a team-high seven home runs along with nine doubles and 27 RBI. Spears is hitting .268 on the year with a .479 slugging percentage.

The Tiger pitching staff has a 4.89 ERA collectively.

Connor Eller is the ace of the staff with a 5-5 record and a 3.46 ERA. Eller, the brother of former Reddie pitcher Nathan Eller, has worked 88 innings and struck out 84 batters.

Connor Reed is set to pitch the second game of the series. Reed has a 3-8 record, sporting a 3.59 ERA. Last weekend against Southern Nazarene he pitched a complete-game against Southern Nazarene, striking out 10 batters in picking up the win.

John Franklin Matros is set to pitch the finale of the series. Matros is 3-6 and is coming off a complete-game win against the Crimson Storm where he fanned six batters and surrendered just one runs on four hits.
