On a day of celebration at Henderson State University, the Reddies throttled Northwestern Oklahoma 62-23, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The No. 8 ranked Reddies put up 31 points before the Rangers even recorded their initial first down of the game.
The day began with the dedication of the Ken Duke Golf Center. Duke conducted the coin toss with Henderson winning the toss and go on to reward the crowd of 5138 with its 13
th consecutive conference victory.
The Reddies dominated the opening half beginning with a 38-yard field goal by
Houston Ray.
Andrew Black would then go to work as the sophomore moved the Reddies easily down the field, racking 315 yards passing while completing 17-of-22 passes in the first half.
Black recorded his first passing touchdown of the year when he hit
Courtney Whitehead for a 25-yard score to put the Reddies on top 10-0 with 6:12 left in the opening quarter.
The score was set up by a 52-yard completion to
Austin Bennett on the previous play.
Henderson added another score just before the end of the quarter as
Evan Lassiter completed a 4-yard pass to Bennett to cap off a 7-play, 72-yard drive. The drive was ignited by a 36-yard completion to Whitehead from Black on the first play.
Henderson, 3-0 on the season, would erupt for 28 points in the second quarter with the defense getting in on the action.
Jeremy Wilson scored the first touchdown of the quarter with a 30-yard scamper. Then it was the defense's turn as
Benny McCall put a big hit on Reid Miller forcing a fumble with
Sheldon Watson scooping and scoring with a 44-yard score to put Henderson on top 31-0.
On Northwestern's next drive,
Sam Johnson forced a Miller fumble with
Cameron Sonnier recovering at the Reddie 46.
The Reddies marched down field with the help of a 34-yard completion from Black to
Adler Goode to set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by
Robert Thomas with 5:47 left in the half.
The Rangers, 1-2 on the year, would finally get on the board when Shane Collins intercepted a Black pass and returned it to the Reddie 7. On the first play, Miller hooked up with Horatio Smith for a 7-yard strike with 4:00 remaining in the half.
Henderson would tack on one more score before the break as Wilson would score on a 2-yard dive to make the score 45-7 at the half.
Wilson would record his third touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter with another 2-yard run, and Ray would boot a 32-yard field goal as the Reddies would lead 55-10 at the end of three quarters.
Henderson's final score came when
Trent Williams caught an 8-yard pass from Lassiter with 9:19 left in the game.
Henderson ran up 592 yards of offense while the defense allowed 305 yards. with a majority coming in the late stages of the game. In fact, the Reddie defense allowed just 100 total yards in the first half.
Black would finish the game with a career-high 345 yards passing, completing 20-of-26 attempts.
Wilson became the second Reddie this season to go over 100 yards rushing having 103 yards on 9 attempts including three for touchdowns.
Whitehead led all Reddie receivers with 142 yards on 8 receptions.
The Henderson defense recorded 12 tackles for lost yardage with
Josh Davis leading the way with six tackles including one for lost yardage, while
Terrance Bailey had five stops with 2.5 tackles for negative yards. Â
Henderson will hit the road next week as the Reddies travel to Weatherford, Okla. for a 6 p.m. kickoff against Southwestern Oklahoma.
