ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State will look to stain rival Ouachita Baptist's unbeaten season on Saturday when the Reddies tangle with the back-to-back GAC Champion and No. 4 ranked Tigers in the 92nd installment of the Battle of the Ravine at 1 p.m. inside Carpenter-Haygood Stadium at Ruggles Field.
TOP STORYLINES: SETTING THE SCENE
- The Reddies are looking to avoid their first losing season since 2009 and their first three-game losing skid to Ouachita Baptist since they dropped three-straight from 2001-2003. The Tigers, who clinched the 2018 GAC title last weekend with a win over Southern Arkansas, can all but secure a home game in the NCAA Central Region playoffs by defeating HSU on Saturday.
- This is the 92nd meeting all-time between the cross-street rivals. Henderson leads the all-time series 43-42-6. The game has been decided by one score or less in four of the last five seasons. The Battle of the Ravine is tied for the oldest rivalry game in NCAA DII.
- A win over Ouachita Baptist would give Reddies' head coach Scott Maxfield 100 wins in his career at HSU. The Tigers would represent the highest ranked opponent the Reddies have beaten in the NCAA DII era. Henderson defeated No. 12 Delta State in 2007, which is the current highest-ranked opponent HSU has ever defeated.
THE BATTLE OF THE RAVINE: QUICK FACTS
- Billed as "The Shortest Road Trip in College Football" the Battle of the Ravine was first played in 1895 when Ouachita College defeated Arkadelphia Methodist College 8-0 on Thanksgiving Day. Every year, the visiting team walks across Highway 67 to their rival's stadium.
- The game was traditionally played on Thanksgiving but in 1951 the series was discontinued after Henderson won 54-0 and the pranks between the two schools got out of hand.
- The rivalry resumed in 1963 and continued uninterrupted until 1993 when Henderson made its jump from NAIA to NCAA DII. When OBU did the same in 1996, play resumed once more. Since then, the game has been played every year other than in 2004 and 2005, when both schools were in the Gulf South and rotated off of the other's schedule.
- Of the 91 previous meetings, the game has been decided by a touchdown or less 42 times. The longest winning streak by either team is held by HSU, who won eight-straight from 1988 to 1998.
REDDIES REPORT
- Senior receiver Ben Johnson is second in the GAC in receptions (61) and sixth in receiving yards (677) this season. Johnson is tied with Garrett Manning for fourth in school history with 128 career receptions and is sixth all-time at the school in career receiving yards (1678).
- Senior linebacker Cameron Sonnier is one of just seven players in the conference this year to have 80 or more tackles. Sonnier has 87 total stops with 12 tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception to lead the Reddies' defense. His 12 tackles for loss this season is the third-most of any player in the league.
- In the backfield, junior running back Logan Moragne has been solid for Henderson this year. He is third in the GAC in rushing yards per game (73.9) and has racked up 688 yards on the ground in 2018. Moragne averages 6.1 yards per carry.
- Under center, junior quarterback Richard Stammetti has enjoyed success during his first season with Henderson. Stammetti has completed 192-of-365 passes for 2256 yards and 17 touchdowns this year. He is one of just five players in the league to throw for over 2000 yards and ranks fifth in the GAC in passing yards and passing yards per game (225.6).
- The secondary has been led by senior safety Malik Brown, as well as junior cornerback CJ Jones. Brown is tied for the conference lead with four interceptions on the year, while Jones is one of eight players league-wide to have 10 or more pass break-ups.Â
- The Reddies rank sixth in the GAC in both total offense (378.4 yards per game) and total defense (371.8 yards per game allowed to opponents). Henderson's rush defense, which will be tested on Saturday, is sixth in the conference, allowing an average of 158.3 yards on the ground to its opponents per contest.Â
- Henderson is the second-least penalized team in the GAC with an average of just 51.7 penalty yards per game.
SCOUTING NO. 4 OUACHITA BAPTIST
- Ouachita Baptist enters Saturday's Battle of the Ravine 10-0 and ranked No. 4 in the latest AFCA poll. The Tigers clinched the 2018 GAC title last week with a dominant 35-10 victory over Southern Arkansas. OBU was No. 2 in the Central Region rankings as of Monday morning and would likely lock up a home playoff game with a win over Henderson. The Tigers are led by head coach Todd Knight, who is 110-94 in 20 seasons at the school.
- The Tigers boast one of the best defenses and rushing attacks in the country. OBU has the No. 1 scoring defense in the nation and allows just 9.6 points per game to its opponents. On the other side of the ball, the Tigers have the No. 9 rushing offense in America and average 278.2 yards per game on the ground.
- Offensively, OBU is led by a trio of backs, starting with senior Kris Oliver, who is the GAC's all-time leading rusher. He is second in the league in rushing yards (825) this season. Junior Shun'cee Thomas is fifth in the GAC with 711 rushing yards and junior Brockton Brown has a GAC-high 12 rushing touchdowns and 497 yards on the ground this year. The three backs have combined for 26 rushing scores in 2018. The Tigers also possess threats on the outside in junior Allie Freeman and senior Drew Harris. The speedy Freeman has 411 receiving yards and is dangerous in the return game, while Harris scored 26 touchdowns last season, including seven against HSU.
- OBU's defense is led by sophomore defensive lineman Dameyun McDonald, who has a team-high nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks this season. Junior defensive back Keandre Evans leads the secondary with four interceptions and 11 pass breakups, while senior defensive back Airric Parker leads the team with 58 total tackles.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING
- In a back-and-forth affair, Ouachita Baptist's Drew Harris scored seven touchdowns for the Tigers and helped OBU win the 91st Battle of the Ravine 49-42 to clinch the out-right GAC title.
- Henderson fell behind 49-28 before staging a fourth-quarter comeback to cut the lead down to 49-42 with seconds remaining. The Reddies then recovered their onside kick to give themselves a chance for one throw on the last play of the game, but they never got the throw off as OBU held on to win.
- The Reddies racked up 545 yards of total offense, including a career-high 463 yards passing from Evan Lassiter, in the loss. Lassiter completed a school-record 47 passes on the day.Â
- Harris' seven touchdowns set a new GAC-record. He finished with 271 all-purpose yards.Â
