Henderson State, UAM Battle for First Place in the GAC

Henderson State will travel to Monticello, Ark. for a Great American Conference showdown as the Reddies begin a three-game series with No. 17 Arkansas-Monticello on Friday with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.

The two teams will battle for first place in the league as Henderson enters the weekend with a 19-10 record overall and a 14-4 mark in league play, while the league-leading Boll Weevils are 21-7 on the year and 15-3 in the GAC.

The series will conclude with a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

UAM leads the league in nearly every offensive category including team batting average (.330), runs per game (9.5), home runs (49), doubles (74) and slugging percentage (.564).

The Boll Weevils have the top three run producers in the GAC with Sean Wagner, Jordan Johnson and Brady Weiss combining for 107 runs batted in.

Wagner leads the league with 44 RBI and is third in slugging percentage at .716 which includes 9 home runs to go along with his .388 batting average.

Garrett Dodd leads the team offensively with a .390 average which includes a team-best 36 runs scored, 11 doubles, 9 homers and a .752 slugging percentage.

The UAM pitching staff has compiled a 5.20 earned run average with opponents hitting .253 on the season.

Braden Chambers, Michael Harrison, and Peyton Sullivan make up the Weevil weekend rotation.

Chambers is 5-0 on the year with a 5.18 ERA. The senior from Fordyce, Ark. has recorded 43 strikeouts in 48.2 innings of work.

Harrison also has an unblemished record of 5-0 with a 4.70 ERA, while Sullivan is 2-2 with a 5.67 ERA.

All three pitchers in the Henderson rotation rank in the top 10 in the GAC in earned run average with Bryant Haralson ranked second with a 2.75 ERA.

The senior from Atkins is 4-2 on the year and ranks fourth in the GAC in strikeouts with 55 in 59 innings of work.

Daniel Sprinkle has compiled a 2.88 ERA which is fourth in the league. The junior from Pine Bluff has fanned 22 batters in 40 innings of work with opponents having a .231 batting average off the right-hander.

Zach Eschberger is set to pitch the finale of the series. The left-hander ranks sixth in ERA at 2.96. The junior from Bullard, Texas is 5-0 in GAC play and has totaled 37 punch-outs in 48.2 innings.

Offensively, Jordan Harris is hitting .346 on the year which includes nine doubles, four home runs and a .542 slugging percentage.

Daniel Colasanto and Caleb Carr are both hitting .350 with Colasanto having a .500 average in conference games going 13-for-26 at the plate.

Zack Gray leads the club in runs batted in (24) and home runs (5), while hitting .280 on the year.

Since the inception of the Great American Conference, the Boll Weevils have an 18-5 record over the Reddies including beating Henderson in the championship game of the GAC Tournament the last two years.
