WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Henderson State used a quick start on Saturday to cruise past Southwestern Oklahoma State 35-7 on the road and clinch its best start since 2016.
The Reddies (5-1) dominated the first half in a hostile environment and got out to a 28-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. After Logan Moragne got the scoring started when he took his first carry of the game 56 yards for a touchdown, Henderson scored three touchdowns in the span of two minutes at the start of the second quarter to take complete control.
Doug Johnson made it 14-0 when Stammetti found him from four yards out on third down and on the ensuing kickoff SWOSU fumbled and CJ Jones came up with the ball for HSU. The Reddies took advantage moments later when Darius Austin scored on a 4-yard run to extend the lead to 21-0.
A three-and-out from the Henderson defense gave the Reddies all the momentum on the next drive for SWOSU and it only took one play for HSU to capitalize again, as Stammetti found a streaking Chase Lodree for a 45-yard touchdown — his first of the year — to open up a four-score lead. It was never in doubt from that moment and although the Bulldogs played the Reddies to a tie in the final 30 minutes, HSU was able to coast to a comfortable fifth win of the season.
HSU out-gained the Bulldogs 390-250 and rushed for a season-high 239 yards on the ground in the victory. SWOSU averaged just 3.8 yards per play and ran for only 52 yards on 26 carries.
Querale Hall led Henderson with 99 yards rushing on a career-high 19 carries. L'liott Curry finished with six receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown, while Richard Stammetti threw for 151 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Defensively, Mercardo Anderson had a brilliant game and finished with a team-high nine tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, and his first interception of the year. The Reddies held SWOSU to just 60 yards in their dominant first half.
Henderson returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 19, when it hosts East Central at 2 p.m. for Homecoming at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field.
