ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The Reddies followed up a wild series win at Northwestern Oklahoma State with a decisive 12-1 midweek victory at Christian Brothers on Tuesday afternoon. Henderson State baseball has now won seven of its last eight contests, and will go for its third-straight GAC series win this weekend when the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State visit Clyde Berry Field for a three game set.
HSU and SWOSU will take the field for one game tonight, Friday, March 22, at 6 p.m. and finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
REDDIES REPORT
- Although HSU got off to a bumpy start in conference play, the Reddies are still very much in the hunt for a spot in the Great American Conference tournament. Henderson State (12-13, 6-9) currently sits in ninth place in the GAC standings, but just two games separate HSU and the four teams directly above them, with one of those teams being Henderson's weekend foe, the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs.
- The Reddies roll into the SWOSU set after being held to just a trio of runs and no extra base hits in last weekend's the series opener. However, the Reddies responded by crossing the plate 23 times in the final two games, and winning the series two games to one.
-
Joseph Shepherd, who leads the Reddies with a .341 average, continued his scorching senior season by going 6-for-13 with seven RBIs over the week while continuing to stay perfect at his right field position.
- After going 1-for-5 in the series opening 7-3 loss to Northwestern,
Brandon Pollock finished the weekend with a three-hit effort and drove in two of the Reddies' 13 runs. Pollock leads HSU with a .449 on-base percentage.
- Following an up-and-down start to the 2019 campaign,
Danny Mitchell Jr. has perhaps been the Reddies hottest hitter in recent weeks. Mitchell Jr. now has four multi-hit games in his last six outings and has raised his batting average by more than .060 points during an eight game hitting streak. The North Little Rock native has also flashed plenty of power, and has five of HSU's 10 home runs on the year.
- The Reddies are hoping that last season's hitting leader
Caleb Carr can continue to find his form in the batter's box. In the final two games of the weekend series with NWOSU, the Central Arkansas transfer had perhaps his two best outings of the season, going a combined 5-for-8 with three RBIs and a home run.
- On the mound, the Henderson has been paced by
Kris Priddy, who continued his fantastic senior season with two more scoreless appearances at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Priddy has allowed just one earned run in his last 18 innings pitched, and has amassed a 1.42 ERA in GAC appearances.
- Since becoming a mid-week fixture in the Reddies' rotation,
Dalton O'Donnell has given Henderson three quality starts in a row. Most recently, O'Donnell worked around five hits and gave HSU five scoreless innings in a 12-1 win over Christian Brothers.
- One of the most clutch performers of the Northwestern Oklahoma State series was
Spencer Taack, who gave the Reddies three innings of scoreless relief, allowing HSU to win the series finale over the Rangers in extra innings, 13-10. After Henderson scored four runs in the top of the seventh to keep the game going, Taack worked around Rangers' runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, eighth, and ninth to pick up the win and help the Reddies grab a massive victory.

SCOUTING SWOSU
- Following an impressive series victory over the nationally ranked Southern Arkansas Muleriders, SWOSU has dropped three of their last four games, including two out of three against Ouachita Baptist.
- Southwestern Oklahoma State (12-12, 8-7) has put together a combined .248 batting average as the lineup has been very much in flux. Only two SWOSU players have started all 24 games in the 2019 season, while nine others have started 10 games or more.
- Alex Pimentel and Alex Bedard are the two Bulldogs who have started every game, and their stats explain why. Pimentel and Bedard carry batting averages of .366 and .348, respectively, and are both slugging over .500. While having only combined for one home run, they are menaces on the base paths, and have stolen 24 bases in 28 attempts combined. The Reddies will also have to be wary of Rafael Villela, who is batting .370 in eight starts this season.
- SWOSU's Cooper Cantwell and Tyler Tuck are the Bulldogs most popular choices on the rubber. Both have thrown 40-plus innings this season and have a combined 6-4 record in 13 starts. The Bulldogs have also gotten solid outings from relievers Jesse Lee, Tyler Barnett and Brant Millerborg, who have a combined 1.70 ERA in 37 innings pitched.
