Henderson Splits Friday Doubleheader at SNU

BETHANY, Okla. — Henderson State used the long ball in the second game on Friday to defeat Southern Nazarene 9-3 and split the doubleheader.

The Reddies (12-10, 6-4) will go for the series win tomorrow when they face the Crimson Storm in the second doubleheader of the weekend at 12 p.m.

Game 2: Henderson State 9, Southern Nazarene 3
The Reddies used the momentum from two home runs in the second inning to blitz the Crimson Storm in Friday's second game and earn a split of the doubleheader with a 9-3 win.

Much like in the first game of the day, SNU got on the board early with a run in the first inning. This time however, Henderson responded, as both Christian Camp and Ashlyn Taylor launched two-run home runs in the second to surge HSU to a 4-1 advantage.

The Reddies extended their lead in the third, when Marcela Lopez scored on an RBI groundout from Madie Green and Abbie Moore singled in Kailey Reese to make it 6-1.

SNU threatened by putting two runners in scoring position in the fourth, but could not plate either, and both teams went down in order in the fifth.

With the score still 6-1 in their favor, the Reddies added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Green got the inning going when she doubled to score Reese, then scored herself on a Crimson Storm throwing error. Taylor added the final run on a fielder's choice RBI with the bases loaded moments later to give Henderson a commanding 9-1 lead.

SNU did scratch two runs in the bottom half on a home run from Mahina Sauer, but it was not nearly enough, as HSU held on to split the doubleheader.

Taylor finished with two hits and three RBIs to lead Henderson on the day, while Green, Camp, and Moore all added two RBIs. Camp's home run was her team-leading fourth of the year.

Becca Almond picked up the complete game victory in the circle for the Reddies for her second win of the season. Almond allowed just three earned runs and did not walk a single batter.

Game 1: Southern Nazarene 9, Henderson State 1

Southern Nazarene racked up 16 hits and raced past Henderson 9-1 in five inning in the first contest of the day.

The Reddies had seven hits of their own in the game, but could scratch just one run, which came off the bat of Marcela Lopez's RBI single in the fifth inning.

The Crimson Storm jumped on HSU quickly with a run in the first, then added two runs in the third and fourth to go in front 5-0. After Lopez's RBI, SNU tacked on four more in the bottom half of the inning to enact the run rule and secure the win.

Alyssa Dixon and Ashlyn Taylor each had two hits in game one to lead the Reddies.
