HSU Delivers in the Clutch to Take Two from UAM

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Down to its final three outs twice on Sunday, Henderson State found a way to win both games, and swept Arkansas-Monticello in the twin bill with 7-5 and 4-2 victories at Dee White Field.

The Reddies (23-23, 17-17) slapped 22 hits in the doubleheader and will go for the sweep of UAM tomorrow at 12 p.m.

Henderson State 7, UAM 5
The Reddies squandered a one-run lead late in the seventh inning, but scored two in the 10th to prevail 7-5 in the first game on Sunday.

After falling behind 1-0, HSU scored three runs in the second, two of which came on a single from Christianna Camp, to go in front 3-1.

An error on Henderson helped UAM plate two runs to tie the game in the third, and following two scoreless innings, the Blossoms snatched the lead back on an RBI ground out in the sixth, to take a 4-3 lead and push the Reddies to their final three outs.

With two on and two outs in the seventh, Kailey Reese came through for Henderson when she drove in both runners on a two RBI single to give HSU a 5-4 advantage.

It was UAM's turn to be down to its final three outs in the bottom half, and much like the Reddies, the Blossoms answered the call. With two outs in the frame, UAM's Haley Cornell launched a solo home run to tie the game and send the contest to extra innings.

Neither side could get much going in the eight or ninth, but in the 10th, it was Henderson who finally broke through. The Reddies used four hits, two of which were RBI singles from Camp and Nadia Ballarin, to retake the lead, 7-5.

Unlike in the seventh, UAM had no answer in the bottom half, as Michelle Sorensen set them down in order to win it for Henderson.

Camp led HSU with three hits in the game, while Reese, Lindsey Williams, Marcela Lopez, and Monica Montreal all had two. Sorensen got the complete game win by pitching all 10 innings and striking out seven batters.

Henderson State 4, UAM 2
The Reddies saved the big inning for last in the second game on Sunday, and used a big seventh frame to defeat the Blossoms 4-2 and sweep the day at Dee White Field.

It was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings of game two, as HSU's Becca Almond and UAM's Hayley McGhee kept runs off the board on either side.

In the sixth, it was the Blossom who finally got on the board, when they used and RBI double to take a 1-0 lead.

Down to their final three outs for the second time in two games, the Reddies responded once again in the top of the seventh. Henderson wasted no time, and used four-straight hits to open the frame, the biggest of which was a two-RBI double from Madie Green, to quickly erase the deficit and go in front, 2-1. The big inning was not over, however, as Kailey Reese delivered her second two RBI single of the doubleheader to extended the Reddies' lead to 4-1.

The Blossoms made things interesting in the bottom half, and used an error, a single, and two walks to get one run back, but it was not enough, as the Reddies held on for the 4-2 win and the sweep of the day.

Almond was excellent in the circle for HSU and got the win by throwing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits. Mallory Brewer picked up the save by finishing the game off for Henderson in the seventh.

Green, Abbie Moore, and Ashlyn Taylor all had two hits on the day to lead the Reddies at the plate.
