ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Madie Green's two-run home run jump-started Henderson State's offense as the Reddies split Friday's doubleheader with Southeastern Oklahoma State. Henderson won the first contest 9-2 before dropping the second outing 6-5.
Both
Marcela Lopez and
Lindsey Williams were the only players for either team to collect multi-hit games in both halves of Friday's action. Lopez finished the day a combined 4-for-6 with two RBIs, while Williams wrapped up the evening by going 4-for-7.
Michelle Sorensen got her seventh win of the year with a complete game effort and 10 strikeouts.
Henderson State (19-21, 13-15) remains one game back of Southeastern in the GAC standings, but will have the chance to leapfrog SOSU with tomorrow's doubleheader that begins at 9 a.m.
Game One: Henderson State 9, Southeastern Oklahoma State, 2
Both
Michelle Sorensen and Savage Storm pitcher Katie McCullar did an excellent job of working out of trouble in the early going. HSU loaded the bases in the first, and put two runners on in the second, but was unable to score.
Southeastern got its first opportunity in the top of the third after loading the bases with three singles, but came up empty when Sorensen got her fifth strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
After a single from
Abbie Moore and a ground rule double from
Monica Monreal to start off the top of the fourth, the Reddies finally cashed in when
Kailey Reese drove a bases-clearing triple to left center field. HSU was unable to bring Reese home from third, but the Reddies grabbed a 2-0 lead heading into the latter stages of the game.
Following two runs from SOSU in the top of the fourth, the Reddies kept the pressure on. With two quick outs,
Marcela Lopez walked and stole second to keep the inning alive for Green, who took advantage of the situation and hit her fifth home run of the season to give Henderson a 4-2 lead.
Sorensen retired all three batters in the top of the fifth by way of the strikeout, giving the Reddies a chance to add to the lead in the bottom half. Reese got her second hit of the day before advancing to third on a perfectly executed hit and run with teammate
Alexis Morton.
Williams walked to load the bases and
Ashleigh Erb brought home Reese with a sacrifice fly to center field. Southeastern had a chance to limit the damage, but an infield error allowed both Williams and Morton to score as the lead ballooned to 7-2.
Even with a five run advantage, the Reddies weren't done.
Marcela Lopez tripled to deep center field to score
Ashlyn Taylor from first, then scored herself on a single from Green, to make it 9-2.
The Savage Storm, despite putting runners on the corners in the sixth never got any closer, as HSU took game one, 9-2.
Game Two: Southeastern Oklahoma State 6, Henderson State 5
Henderson got on the board first for the second-straight game when Moore scored Green with a sacrifice fly to give the Reddies a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
HSU doubled the lead an inning later after Reese scored on an infield single from Williams and an error on the Southeastern infield which made it 2-0.
Monica Monreal hit the Reddies' second two out home run of the day in the third, extending HSU's lead to 3-0 after three frames.
After a two-run home run from the Savage Storm in the top of the fourth, Henderson was quick to respond in the bottom half of the inning. With the score tied 3-2 and after two quick outs, the Reddies got three-straight singles from Erb, Taylor, and Lopez to give themselves a 4-2 advantage.
However, the Reddies would strand the bases loaded, which allowed Southeastern to tie the score 4-4 after two more runs in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom half, HSU broke the tie and took the lead for the second time. Monreal worked a leadoff walk and was replaced by
Nadia Ballarin to pinch run. Ballarin advanced to second on a sacrifice from Reese and to third on a deep fly out from Morton. With two outs, Williams came up clutch with an infield single to put HSU in front 5-4.
The Reddies were unable to hold that lead however. In the top of the seventh, Southeastern's Felicia Drake reached first despite striking out before an infield single gave the Storm two runners on with just one out. After a pop up and with SOSU down to its final out, Elexis Watson cleared the bases with a double to right centerfield to give Southeastern their first lead of the day, 6-5.
Following a leadoff single by Monreal and a double down the left field line from Morton, the Reddies had a great chance to tie it in the bottom of the seventh, but left the two runners stranded, and fell 6-5.
