MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Henderson State dropped both games of a twin bill with Southern Arkansas in heart-breaking fashion on Sunday as the Reddies fell 7-6 in the early contest and 4-3 in the series finale.
The Reddies will look to bounce back on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they host Texas A&M-Texarkana at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia.
Game 1: Southern Arkansas 7, Henderson State 6
After falling behind 5-0, Henderson scored six runs in four innings to tie the game and send it into extras, but SAU came away with a walk-off single in the 10th to hold on and win the series with a 7-6 victory.
The Reddies were limited to just two hits in the first five innings of the day's opening game by the Muleriders, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five. HSU finally got on the board in the sixth on a two-RBI single from
Danny Mitchell Jr., but Southern Arkansas tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead into the seventh.
The last next three innings belonged to Henderson. The Reddies got the rally going in the seventh when they scored two runs on a sacrifice fly from
Greyson Stevens and an RBI single from
Joe Myers to cut the deficit to 6-4. SAU gifted HSU another run in the eighth when the Muleriders walked
Josh Aguilar then allowed him to come home on three wild pitches to bring Henderson within one, 6-5.
Down to their final three outs in the ninth inning and still trailing by a run, Myers came through with his biggest hit of the year for HSU, as he hammered a pitch over the wall in left field to tie the game at 6-6. Henderson reliever
Taylor Langston proceeded to put the Muleriders down in order in the bottom half which sent the game into extra innings.
The Reddies mustered a walk with one out in the top of the 10th before a strike out and ground out ended the inning for HSU. Southern Arkansas immediately capitalized in the bottom half, as its leadoff man Austin Baker walked and then stole second base to put the pressure on Henderson. Back-to-back singles from the Muleriders on the next two at-bats sank the Reddies and brought home Baker to win it for SAU, 7-6.
Myers had two hits and two RBIs to lead Henderson at the plate.
Kolby Reck also had his first multi-hit game as a Reddie with two on the day.
Game 2: Southern Arkansas 4, Henderson State 3
An early 2-0 lead did not hold up for Henderson in the series finale as SAU came back and held on defeat the Reddies 4-3 in the seven-inning game to sweep the weekend and remain unbeaten this year.
HSU got off to a great start when RBI singles from
Danny Mitchell Jr. and
Kaden Argenbright gave the Reddies a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. The lead was short live, however, as the Muleriders quickly tied things up by plating two runs in the bottom half of the frame.
After a scoreless second, Henderson struck again in the third courtesy of Argenbright once again, who laced a double down the left field line to score
Caleb Carr and put HSU up 3-2. The double nearly plated another run for the Reddies but
Cade Tucker was cut down at the plate by a perfect relay from SAU.
The could-have-been fourth run for Henderson loomed large when the Muleriders scored twice more in the bottom half of the third to go in front 4-3. Unfortunately for the Reddies, Argenbright's double proved to be their final hit of the weekend, as they could not find one more run and fell for the third time in two days.
The freshman Argenbright's two hits and two RBIs led HSU in game two of the doubleheader. Starter
Brayden Bebee took the loss in the game after allowing four runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of action.
