BETHANY, Okla. — Austin Cross pitched a complete-game shutout and Henderson State racked up 15 hits in just seven innings to dominate Southern Nazarene 11-0 in a run-ruled series opener on Friday.
Cross was tremendous for the Reddies and allowed just two hits in seven innings of work to pick up his first win of the year on the mound. The junior from Ashdown, Arkansas struck out six Crimson Storm batters and did not register a walk.
HSU (8-11, 5-5) made life difficult on the other side for SNU starter Brett Rexroad, who the Reddies tagged for 11 hits and eight runs in just 4.2 innings. Four different players had two hits in the game for Henderson and freshman Kaden Argenbright drove in four runs — three of which came on a home run in the sixth — to continue his strong play of late.
Henderson broke a scoreless tie in the third when a single from Caleb Carr and a sac fly from Greyson Stevens plated two runs to make it 2-0.Â
The wheels fell off for the Crimson Storm in the fifth inning, when the Reddies scored six runs off of six singles to seize a commanding 8-0 lead. Carr, Stevens, Argenbright and Cade Tucker all picked up RBIs in the frame. Argenbright's three-run blast in the sixth brought the run-rule into effect for HSU and Cross did the rest, as he sat down SNU in order in the final two innings to close out the win.
After giving up a hit to the first SNU batter of the game, Cross allowed just one more over the next six innings and did not give up a hit in the final five frames.
The Reddies and Crimson Storm return to action tomorrow when they play a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
